JOB INFORMATION:

Exempt; full-time; 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; may occasionally work evenings or weekends to fulfill FCSO needs; full-benefits


This professional position with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office is responsible for performing advanced public relations work for comprehensive and strategic communications, marketing, public information, recruitment, and outreach.

This position is responsible for managing the Sheriff's Office public website, social media channels, implementing communications policies and strategies to manage the FCSO brand, style, and communications content.

This includes the development and implementation of integrated Sheriff's Office communication strategies and policies, including media relations, advertising, public information, social media, video/graphic services, print design, production, and statistical research/reporting.

Supervision is received from the Law Enforcement Bureau Chief.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:


Media Relations and Communication:


  • Serve as the primary information and media relations advisor for the Office of the Sheriff, act as the Sheriff's Office's Spokesperson/Public Information Officer by speaking to the media; develop and implement strategic communications and public affairs plans to promote the Sheriff's Office
  • Draft and edit Associated Pressstyle feature stories, news releases, and targeted media pitches to promote Sheriff's Office employees, programs, and the agency's brand
  • Oversee new media initiatives as needed to meet the changing technologies, environment, and communication needs of the agency
  • Manage and authorize the release of information concerning confidential investigations and operations
  • Advice Sheriff's Office staff on communication issues, provide guidance and training on media relations, including oncamera/onair communication skills
  • Represent the Sheriff and agency at meetings, conferences, Town Halls, and communitybased forums to include online webinars and meetings
  • Work with FCGTV, public service announcements to include safety messages, bodyworn camera video releases, and messages from the Sheriff's Office

Community Engagement and Event Coordination:


  • Coordinate and host community engagement events on behalf of the Sheriff's Office to include the Open House, National Night Out, Promotion and Award ceremonies; as needed, emcee at events
  • Coordinate community programs to include: Bicycle Safety, Gun Safety, Internet Safety, Drug Awareness, and Traffic Safety Programs

Administrative and Miscellaneous:


  • Manage citizens' concerns and coordinate the tracking and responses to complaints, requests, and inquires; initiate corrective action; follow up to ensure satisfaction
  • Primary point of contact for Sheriff's Office communications, internal and external; ensuring cohesive and consistent messaging and branding and ensure compliance with all policies and laws; maintain up to data media and communication contact list
  • Maintain list of Wanted Persons on FCSO website
  • Assist the Sheriff's Office's Human Resources staff with a comprehensive annual recruitment and marketing plan that includes goals, strategies, and tactics to create greater awareness of the Sheriff's Office's vacancies
  • Oversee the quality assurance of the Sheriff's Office graphics and branding, including but not limited to print material, website design, social media, and promotional material
  • Serve as an active member of the Sheriff's Office Critical Incident Response Team, providing communication guidance, establishing media staging areas, and liaise between the agency, communities, and media
  • Drive County vehicle to incidents and events in completion of workrelated duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:


The qualifications/requirements, knowledge/skills/abilities and physical requirements or working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.


  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or related field
  • Minimum 6 years work experience serving in a related public information officer role, which includes:
  • Social media work experience to include but not limited to Facebook, X, Instagram and Snapchat
  • Experience using website/app content management systems
  • Experience in website design, maintenance and management, specially using the Wix platform
  • Photography, videography, and/or graphic design experience
  • Minimum 2 years of ex
