Responsibilities:

The
Nursing
Unit Clerk facilitates the efficient operation of the patient care unit. The Nursing Unit Clerk is the communication hub of the unit.

The Nursing Unit Clerk serves as the unit receptionist, interacting with medical and ancillary staff, patients and the public in a courteous manner.

This position provides essential administrative and service support to health care team members.

  • Establishes and maintains good communications with families/visitors and hospital staff.
  • Reports vital information to all levels of the healthcare team as needed as evidenced by feedback from healthcare team members and observed by supervisor.
  • Conveys needed information to patients and visitors, measured by patient and coworker feedback.
  • Maintains good communication with coworkers for proper team functioning as evidenced by feedback from healthcare team members and observed by supervisor.
  • Communicates pertinent patient observations to members of the health care team as evidenced by feedback from healthcare team members and observed by supervisor.
  • Provides essential administrative and service support to providers/health care team members.
  • Establishes and maintains an organized, functional work environment to assure optimal efficiency of patient care staff, as observed by supervisor.
  • Answers telephone in a timely, courteous manner, and relays messages to appropriate personnel, as evidenced by customer feedback.
  • Transcribes provider orders timely and accurately during downtime procedures, as measured by random supervisory review of order processing.
  • Maintains the patient's medical record according to unit and organizational standards, as evidenced by supervisory chart review.
  • Updates patient clinical information systems in a timely manner in order to assure accurate information for patient care staff, as noted by random supervisory review of chart and computer.
  • Schedules procedures, followup appointments, and communicates plans to the health care team, as measured by random supervisory interdepartmental review.
  • Performs and/or supports unit based audits as directed by supervisor.
  • Supports interdepartmental patient flow process, as evidenced by customer feedback and as observed by supervisor.
  • Assists in supporting Environment of Care (EOC) standards as directed and observed by supervisor.
  • Performs patient services initiatives as designated by health care team members.
  • Supports workflow processes for providers and health care team members as evidenced by customer feedback and as observed by supervisor.
  • Monitors and records temperatures for specimen refrigerators daily.
  • Responds appropriately to out of range refrigerator temperatures.
  • Collaborates with Nurse Manager to support adherence to unit budget.
  • Orders needed unit supplies and maintains adequate inventory, as evidenced by supervisory review of monthly expense reports and customer feedback.
  • Demonstrates effective time management skills, as measured by completion of job responsibilities during scheduled work hours.
  • Communicates patients' needs to appropriate personnel and seeks assistance when necessary to meet those needs.
  • Answers patients' requests for assistance in a timely fashion, as noted by supervisor and patient feedback.
  • Reports patients' needs and relevant patient care data to the RN, as measured by coworker feedback.
  • Attends required computer training programs, as measured by inservice attendance sheet.
  • Telemetry monitoring, if applicable
  • Performs similar or related duties as requested or directed

Qualifications:

Education:


  • High School Diploma or GED, preferred

Experience:


  • Previous healthcare experience, preferred

Physical requirements:


  • Sedentary Work
  • Exerting up to 10 lbs of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
