Public Works Director, Assistant Director of Public Works, or their Designee

JOB SUMMARY:

Assists with all types of manual labor related to road, grounds, and facility maintenance. Work involves routine and non-scheduled maintenance and repairs of the Town's public grounds and facilities. Position assists permanent, full-time employees with the execution of their duties.

  • Mows and trims grass at Municipal buildings, schools, parks, and other public areas.
  • Assists with the following maintenance duties: athletic field preparation and striping, cutting and disposal of brush, garden bed upkeep, and other general grounds maintenance operations.
  • Loads, unloads, and transports equipment.
  • May assist Highway/Building Maintenance in road and building maintenance operations.
  • Assists in snow removal operations.

SUPERVISION:

None exercised.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Valid CT Driver's License
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Some experience in landscaping, construction, facility maintenance, or road work preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:


  • Basic knowledge of materials, methods, and tools used in the maintenance, construction and repair of streets, public buildings, landscaped areas, water and sewer systems and motorized equipment
  • Knowledge of safe working practices and hazardous materials requirements
  • Skill in adapting to a changing work environment, competing demands and ability to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events
  • Skill in the operation of various manual equipment such as shovels, brushes, picks, rakes, cutters and other hand tools and motorized equipment including chainsaws, weedwhackers, mowers, portable generators, snow blowers
  • Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, residents, elected officials, members of commissions, boards, and community groups
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule
  • Ability to work outside of standard business hours / week as needed
  • Ability to pass preemployment background check, drug test, and physical
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement
  • Ability to maintain composure during stressful situations and conflict
  • Ability to represent the Town in a positive manner in interactions with the public

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work and may require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects or materials (up to 100 pounds).

Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment.


ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:


Tasks are regularly performed inside and outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and/or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery and/or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids, violence and/or disease, or pathogenic substances.


SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.

$18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
