Job Purpose
- Define S&E strategy & search priorities for platform technologies in close alignment with the Biomedical Research business strategy
- Lead a team of Search and Evaluation professionals
- Enable S&E leads for Discovery Sciences, Global Discovery Chemistry, Digital and Data, Biologics, Translational Medicine to identify potential collaborations and efficiently and successfully navigate opportunities through internal processes
- Ensure appropriate documenting of all deal flow in the BD database
- Manage team dynamics, performance, and talent development
- Deliver on the S&E strategy by proactively identifying external growth opportunities along the RDC continuum within the platform technology space
- Be agile, creative, and accountable, and implement both a proactive and responsive approach to S&E while aiming at fast turnarounds
- Conduct S&E activities with a creative, openminded partnering philosophy to bring forward new ideas to help achieve our enterpriselevel growth goals
- Enable effective decision making at the Novartis Biomedical Research Deal Committee (NDC)
- Together with the Platforms S&E team, bring creative and appropriate deals to the deal committee and drive meaningful discussions and outcomes on the opportunities
- Communicate discussions and decisions back to the C&BD leadership team
- Face of Novartis to the external environment for partnering on platform technologies
- Build and maintain strong relationships with incubators, accelerators, and venture firms focused on platform technologies
- Build and maintain strong relationships with founders, CBOs, and BOD of biotechs in the platform technology space
- Participate in conferences/congresses, serve on panels, provide mentoring to strengthen the value of platform technology space
Major Accountabilities:
- Within BD&L
- Manager of multiple associates that aims to identify growth opportunities (leads) in line with the BR and platform strategy
- Define the S&E strategy within the platform technology space, drive to decision making at the NDC, and deliver on the strategy
- Proactively identifies external growth opportunities along the RDC continuum within the platform technology space
- Efficiently screens inbound opportunities and conducts triage and ensures appropriate documenting of all deal flow around external opportunities
- Establish a strong knowledge exchange within the S&E community as well as with other groups of the Corporate & Business Development group.
- Develops and retains top talent within the S&E community
- Acts as role model of Novartis Values and Behaviors
- With S&G and other functions
- Serve as a component of the competitive intelligence network by identifying future or potential areas of interest within the platform technology space
- Contribute to building the portfolio strategy within the platform technology space and provide input on actionability of external growth
- Build enterprise relationships and establish credibility and trust with key internal stakeholders within their area of S&E coverage and across the organization
- On processes and governance
- Strengthens the frontend of the BD process by enabling Platforms S&E team to conduct efficient screening of inbound opportunities, conduct triage, and ensuring that the Platforms S&E team appropriately document all external opportunities
- Ensure appropriate discussions of opportunities within Triage Teams and deal committee throughout the deal process
- In close collaboration with other deal team members, ensure deal team is prepared for NDC, DEC, ECN-DC, or other governance meetings
- Accountable for Platform S&E team using best process/principles, including use of such module in Inova or similar system
- Accountable for establishing functional excellence & continued improvement to significantly enhance the value of the opportunity pipeline and prioritize the portfolio in accordance with scientific merit and strategic priorities within their area of coverage
- With external stakeholders
- Act as an ambassador for BR platforms and for the broader Novartis organization in the external Pharma/Biotech/Venture Capital/Academic
- Responsible for being the face of Novartis to the outside world in their area of coverage, notably the biotech community and others, and providing timely feedback to potential partners
