ABOUT YU MING CHARTER SCHOOL


Yu Ming Charter School is a non-profit, tuition-free network of public schools located in Oakland and San Leandro and open to all residents of California.

As a leader in Mandarin Immersion education, our mission is to nurture our inclusive and diverse community to become empowered, engaged, and outstanding global citizens.

We currently serve 800 students across three campuses, and continue to grow our enrollment each year.

Our intentionally diverse student body comes from many racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds representing 70 zip codes across the Bay Area and 29 home languages.

Founded in 2011, Yu Ming is the first Mandarin immersion public charter school in the state.


POSITION OVERVIEW

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR DESIGN LAB

  • Provide a high quality, personalized education program in the creative/professional arts (visual art, design, film/music production, theater arts, etc.)
  • Make learning visible to the community in classrooms, hallways and arranging exhibits of students' work
  • Engage students in the creative process and cultivate their talents while deepening their knowledge and understanding of art, design, or other creative arts
  • Build a classroom culture of selfexpression in which students love art and utilize academic discourse to press student critical thinking about their creativity
  • Prepare lesson plans and course timelines; select supplies, raw materials, software programs and/or books for courses
  • Communicate regularly with students and their families about classroom activities and student progress
  • Identify unique student needs and collaborate with team members to effectively address those needs
  • Develop a weeklong expeditionary handson learning experiences for upper school students
  • Actively participate in professional development activities including engaging in training with school leaders and coaches to benefit from targeted feedback on instruction
  • Collaborate with colleagues to leverage collective expertise and resources to create a positive, inclusive, and effective learning environment for students
  • Maintain a highlevel of professionalism including meeting deadlines and commitments to self and the community
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR DIVERSITY STUDIES AND SEL

  • Deliver SEL lessons effectively to students, using a variety of teaching strategies to engage learners and accommodate diverse learning styles
  • Facilitate group discussions, roleplaying activities, and experiential learning opportunities that promote socialemotional growth and skill development
  • Implement the Compass Model including facilitating Compass Circles and Badge Work
  • Implement comprehensive diversity curriculum that explores various dimensions of diversity
  • Deliver engaging lessons and activities that encourage critical thinking, empathy, and cultural competence among students
  • Provide opportunities for students to explore their own identities and engage in respectful dialogue about issues of equity and social justice
  • Organize events, workshops, and guest speakers to raise awareness and facilitate dialogue around diversityrelated topics
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment where students feel valued, respected, and connected
  • Establish and maintain clear expectations for behavior and interpersonal interactions, modeling positive socialemotional skills and attitudes
