Description
Overview:
Ikaria is a high-performance, health-oriented meal prep service that serves entrepreneurs, executives, investors, athletes, performers, and more.
Clients typically want to gain muscle, lose weight, improve physical or mental performance, and be the healthiest person they can be for the long term.
They rely on us to get them there.
We're looking for a talented and ambitious chef to not just lead the kitchen, but to help build the company.
The job is initially a part-time/contract role, transitioning to full time as the service expands.
As the company grows there will be many opportunities for advancement: scaling the kitchen, launching in other cities, product line extensions, and more.
Essential responsibilities:
- Developing recipes, sourcing, building and implementing menus for a highperformance, healthoriented clientele. You stay on top of the latest health & nutrition trends and integrate them into the menu.
- Leading production: overseeing all aspects of meal preparation, ensuring quality, precision, and reliability. Ensure we make the right thing (with the right portions) for each client every time, and that they're amazed by the product.
- Leading culinary staff including hiring, training, supervision, scheduling hours, performance management, and, as needed, termination
- Assisting in establishing a culinary budget including menu costing, inventory management and tracking, and invoice processing
- Designing & implementing procedures for serving food, as well as rotating and storing food within coolers, freezers, dry storage, etc. General quality control, food handling, and health & safety compliance.
- Establishing relationships with top quality, nutritionalminded suppliers to procure seasonal, local and sustainable ingredients
High-performance, health-focused nutrition skills and interest:
- Knowledge of nutrition needs and demands of athletes. You deeply understand the connection between what someone eats and their health, and how food affects muscle gain/weight loss, longevity, and general health. You know how to balance what tastes good with what's good for someone.
- Comprehensive understanding of menu item specifics including, but not limited to, dietary restrictions, food allergies and intolerances, ingredients, portion sizes, and macro and micronutrients (i.e. protein/fat/carbs in a meal)
- You like being on the cutting edge of nutrition science, from understanding diets down to novel ingredients that give our clients an extra advantage
Above and beyond / growth opportunities:
- Overall kitchen design and management: what equipment do we need, when? When do we need more space, and what should that space look like / where should it be / how should it be outfitted? When do we need to overhaul our production processes?
- Working with our technology team to ensure the kitchen team has the tools and information they need to deliver meals reliably and accurately, and that the customers get the full value out of the food we're delivering to them. (There is a companion app to the service that acts as the interface, and your voice will inform its design and development.)
Experience:
- We care about work ethic, ambition, reliability, and drive above all. We're building something new, so no previous experience is a perfect match for the requirements of the job. We want to be confident about your ability to reliably execute the basics, and excited about your demonstrated ability to rapidly learn, and your desire to challenge yourself.
- 13 years of experience in a culinary management role within an athletic nutrition setting (e.g. professional sports team, collegiate athletic department, or Olympic team setting) is helpful, but not required.
- Bachelors' degree in culinary arts, nutrition, food science, and/or related field helps, but is not required
