    Description

    Summary

    This job is for a Supervisory Police Officer - Lieutenant at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The role involves overseeing law enforcement assignments and projects, ensuring a safe environment.

    This job is open to

    Duties

    Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Protecting civil rights on VA property;
    • Performing law enforcement functions;
    • Managing Police Service activities;
    • Serving as a watch commander or administrative lieutenant;
    • Conducting inspections to ensure compliance;
    • Coordinating human resource activities;
    • Responding to active crimes;
    • Making decisions to preserve life and property;
    • Performing other assigned duties.

    DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Selected applicants will undergo drug testing.

    Work Schedule: 12-hour shifts to be determined with Supervisor.

    Requirements

    Conditions of Employment

    • Must be a U.S. Citizen
    • Selective Service Registration required for males born after 12/31/1959
    • Background/security investigation required
    • Probationary period may be required
    • Participation in vaccination programs mandated

    Qualifications

    To qualify, applicants need one year of specialized experience at the GS-8 level or equivalent, which includes supervisory law enforcement responsibilities and administrative functions.

    Driver's License Requirement: Applicants must possess a valid State driver's license.

    Firearm Requirement: VA Police Officers must carry agency-approved firearms.

    How You Will Be Evaluated

    Applicants will be assessed based on qualifications and competencies including Criminal Law, Decision Making, Leadership, and Security.

    Experience is considered, including volunteer work.

    Physical Requirements: Will need to undergo a physical examination due to the strenuous nature of the role.

    Work Environment: Involves moderate to high risks and exposure to uncomfortable conditions.

    Education

    No educational substitution at this level.

    POLICE OFFICER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    1. New VA Police Officers must complete training at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center.

    2. Medical examination and physical requirements apply.

    3. Character investigation is mandatory.

    4. Firearms qualification is necessary.

    5. Must qualify for firearm possession under the Gun Control Act.
