PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY OPEN TO CURRENT REGULAR CITY OF PASADENA EMPLOYEES ONLY


The City of Pasadena Public Health Department is seeking a creative, innovative, and media savvy Public information Coordinator to serve as a spokesperson and liaison to the community for department-related programs, and in the event of an emergency.

This position prepares news releases, marketing materials, talking points, fact sheets, presentations and speeches, and serves as the lead for providing real-time updates on the department's website and social media accounts regarding public health issues and events.

Under direction, this individual plans and reviews the work of staff engaged in developing, coordinating, implementing and administering departmental community relations and public outreach programs, media relations and creative and visual arts programs; and may perform related duties as assigned.

The incumbent will possess the skillset of all facets of communication - writing, editing, brand management, presenting, advertising, art direction, and on-camera interviews.

The incumbent will have practical knowledge of Associated Press writing-style.

IDEAL CANDIDATE


The Public Information Coordinator will have experience developing public health marketing communication campaigns, and building relationships with the news media, community groups and members of the citywide public information team.

The incumbent will effectively manage multiple tasks at a time while working in a fast-paced environment and still able to meet deadlines.

The incumbent will have experience developing multimedia marketing materials including but not limited to newsletters, advertisements, flyers, and web content.

The incumbent will keep constituents informed on current public health events and happenings and be sensitive to what is on social media.

The incumbent is experienced in writing press releases and media alerts, thus strong attention to detail is critical to this position.

The incumbent understands internal dynamics and keeps leadership apprised and is respectful of process and protocol.

Position may require on-call status during non-office hours for emergencies.


Essential Functions:


  • Plans, assigns, schedules, supervises and evaluates the work of assigned staff; with staff, develops, implements and monitors work plans to achieve assigned unit objectives; provides input to the annual budget; makes purchases and other expenditures in accordance with City procedures and monitors performance against the annual budget; participates in developing, implementing and evaluating plans, processes and procedures to achieve established goals and objectives in accordance with department standards; prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports.
  • Interviews and participates in selecting new unit staff; supervises and evaluates staff performance; establishes performance requirements and personal development targets; regularly monitors performance and provides training, coaching and mentoring for performance improvement; recommends performance recognition when warranted; with management concurrence, implements the progressive discipline process to address performance deficiencies, in accordance with City human resources policies and labor contract agreements.
  • Provides daytoday leadership and works with staff to ensure a highperformance, customer serviceoriented work environment that supports achieving City and departmental mission, objectives and service standards; applies best practices and quality assurance processes to assigned areas of responsibility; enforces the maintenance of safe working conditions and ensures safe work practices are followed by staff; provides leadership to ensure a fair and open work environment in accordance with the City's commitment to equal employment opportunity.
  • Manages and participates in development and implementation of departmentlevel communication programs that include community objectives, communication channels, primary messages, enhanced graphics, competitive research, strategy, tactics, and budget; develops and implements internal and external training and public relations activities; tracks statistics and reports outcomes of marketing efforts and public relations programs.
  • Assists with the production of various communication products including infographics, short form videos, newsletters, social media posts, and website news; writes, edits, and publishes informational material in print and digital formats for the public, community groups and staff.
  • Coordinates, researches, develops, and writes materials such as news releases, fact sheets, flyers, brochures, annual reports, newsletters, presentations, and speeches; manages use of department logos; develops and coordinates distribution strategies; ensures public health messaging is evidencebased and ADAcompliant.
