Nursing Support Assistant in our
Mother Baby unit.

With the leadership of the Manager and the Clinical Supervisor, the
Nursing Support Assistant
(CNA) performs assigned supportive work in connection with the delivery of patient care, including functional tasks and skills.


The
Nursing Support Assistant will perform activities which support the daily functions and operations of a patient care unit and the healthcare team.

Provides constant observation and documentation of activity of assigned patient. Works under the direction of the Registered Nurse in the assigned area.

Our team of experts support pregnant women and their partners and families with compassion and respect through pregnancy, childbirth, bonding, breastfeeding and healing.

The Mother-Baby Unit (MBU) offers exceptional care for all healthy newborns born at the University of Chicago Medicine and is equipped with 32 private and spacious care suites that are designed to support family bonding during postpartum recovery.

The unit is staffed by highly-trained, compassionate pediatricians with around-the-clock support from neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners with a goal of providing the best, family-centered newborn care.

The MBU has a full complement of certified lactation consultants, nurses, car seat technicians, social workers, and ancillary staff to give newborns and their families a head start on their new journey together.

The University of Chicago Medicine is a Baby Friendly-certified institution providing a warm and supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers and babies.

Our goal is to partner with and engage families, providing them with the most up-to-date information on newborn health and wellness.


Essential Job Functions

  • Provides basic patient care activities including vital signs, enemas and basic tests such as glucoscan, hemacult and multistix
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living, as appropriate/assigned, using proper aseptic, isolation, and infection control techniques in performance of duties
  • Assists patients with personal hygiene, ambulation and nourishment/fluids
  • Completes procedures as assigned, such as collecting patient specimens and weighing patients.
  • Assists with discharge and transfer preparation of patients
  • Assists in the maintenance of the patient environment: makes patient beds, tidies patient room, and prepares patient room for admission and transfer
  • Assists with the maintenance of supplies/equipment and the environment.
  • Communicates and accurately documents activities onto the proper records or logs
  • Initiates CPR and calls a Dr. Cart
  • Performs receptionist duties for assigned area as requested

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be listed on the IDPH Health Care Worker Registry (HCWR) as an Illinois CNA OR a nursing student who has passed the written competency exam and is listed on the HCWR.
  • CPR/BLS Certification
  • Ability to read and write, perform simple mathematical calculations, follow oral and written instructions, perform variety of tasks without direct supervision and perform duties requiring continuous physical effort
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and/or in written form
  • Ability to work in partnership with management and staff
  • Occasional lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs.
  • Moderate to extreme physical effort such as walking, standing, performing CPR, and lifting materials, equipment, objects and/or patients may be required
  • Vision, hearing, and sense of touch must be adequate to enable one to quickly and accurately perform tasks such as reading small print, defining details, sending and receiving clear and accurate oral communication
  • Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention will be needed to interpret visual, auditory, and sensory inputs
  • Alertness and careful attention to detail is required to avoid injury

Position Details

  • Part-Time (0.6 FTE), 24 hours per week
  • Night shift, 7:00pm 7:00am, every other weekend required
  • Unit/Department: Mother Baby
  • CBA Code: 743 Service and Maintenance
  • Must comply with UCMC's COVID19 Vaccination requirement as a condition of employment. If you have already received the vaccination, you must provide proof as part of the preemployment process.
