Role Overview
The Associate Director, R&D Communications supports the EVP, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Central R&D organization.

This includes key internal communication and change management efforts as well as external communications, storytelling and opportunities to position BD as an innovative leader in MedTech.

This role involves a high degree of visibility and frequent interaction with cross-functional stakeholders and leadership in corporate functions and business units.


This role reports to the Vice President, Global R&D Productivity and Research Center Ireland, with dotted line reporting to Corporate Communications.

This role will operationally be aligned with the R&D Leadership Team, including the CTO.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Executive Team Communications and Change Management_
  • Work in partnership with the CTO and R&D leadership team to create and execute executive and internal engagement and communication strategy to communicate company goals, R&D and innovation priorities, and reinforce cultural aspirations.
  • Understand and deploy change management strategies where needed that maximize associate adoption and participation globally.
  • Create and build communications calendar and execution plans, coordinate communications across the function.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing management of effective communications vehicles. Define and implement strategies that keep these channels fresh while further activating them in innovative and novel ways.
  • Leverage analytics to understand and drive insights into the organization regarding change transformation efforts.
  • Partner with the Corporate Communications team to develop communications strategies and materials for highimpact programs.
  • Internal communications, associate engagement and advocacy _
  • Develop, manage, execute, and champion R&Dwide internal communications and change management strategies and tactics that drive associate engagement through enhanced awareness and understanding of business priorities and key initiatives.
  • Support sensitive organizational and transformation initiatives.
  • Support communications and engagement in Inclusion & Diversity initiatives, as well as other corporate cultural priorities, in alignment and partnership with ID&E, R&D HR and leadership team.
  • Design and ensure smooth execution of key R&D recognition and communication forums, including large events and smaller group forums. Recommend ways to evolve or transform these efforts for more impactful execution and best use of resources.
  • Serve as liaison between the function and Corporate Communications to ensure alignment, sharing of best practices and appropriate inclusion of R&D content within companywide communications.
  • Establish mechanisms for monitoring and measuring the value, impact and outcome of communication and change management initiatives, and proactively adjust approach as needed based on metrics.
  • External communications & executive visibility _
  • Partner with Corporate Communications on executive visibility and thought leadership efforts for CTO, including supporting the development of media and conference briefing materials and staffing needs for select events as determined by Corporate Communications.
  • Ability to develop external digital content (blogs, videos, social media and/or other companyowned media) and storytelling for executive and company channels that positions BD as an innovation thought leader. Experience customizing content and creating clear direction for content pillars and channels.
  • Support site communications for R&D locations to inform key stakeholders of our efforts and contributions locally, in partnership with Corporate Communications.
  • As appropriate, work with Corporate Communications and BU communications teams to support the development and implementation of an R&D angle for storytelling around key product launches that align to the company's key growth platforms.
