- Guides and directs education and regulatory activities pertaining to the program;
- Prepares budget for and evaluates environmental health programs;
- Supervises enforcement of provisions of local and State Public Health Laws and Sanitary Codes relating to air pollution, swimming pools and bathing beaches, camps, hotels, lodging and boarding houses, restaurants and public eating places, stream pollution, realty subdivisions, qualifications of water and sewage treatment plant operators, public health nuisances and related matters;
- Consults and advises concerning the activities carried on in relation to promotion of improved housing and plumbing to meet public health standards;
- Consults and advises concerning programs for insect and rodent control;
- Advises relative to sanitary landfill problems and operation;
- Makes environmental health investigations of outbreaks of disease;
- Formulates and carries on or directs programs for training of water plant operators, environmental health personnel, food handlers, restaurant proprietors, camp owners and other classes of operating personnel;
- Represents the department of health on all matters and problems related to environmental health;
- Maintains relationships and cooperates with State and federal agencies whose work or policies affect the environmental health program; Reviews and signs plans and reports, prepares technical reports including recommendations, oversees projects to completion.
- One year of satisfactory experience as an Assistant Public Health Engineer in a city or county of New York State or Assistant Sanitary Engineer employed by New York State;
OR, - Two years of equivalent satisfactory engineering experience in environmental health.

Responsibilities:
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a license to practice professional engineering in New York State and either:
Open-competitive:
NOTE 1: The applicant must be eligible for a professional engineer's license issued by the State of New York. The candidate must possess the license at the time of appointment.
NOTE 2: A master's degree or equivalent academic education in engineering acceptable to the State Commissioner of Health may be honored in lieu of one year of required general experience.
NOTE 3: A doctor's degree or equivalent academic education in engineering acceptable to the State Commissioner of Health may be honored in lieu of two years of the required general experience. When credit is allowed for a doctor's degree, no additional credit is allowed for a master's degree.
Promotion:
One year of permanent competitive class status as Assistant Public Health Engineer.
Civil Service Status :
Candidate will be subject to civil service examination.
