About Abdul Jabbar Khan:
Experienced Senior Research Scientist with a demonstrated history of working in research and academic settings. Strong professional skilled in Nuclear Physics, Science, Analytical Chemistry, Gamma Spectroscopy, and Atmospheric Science. I am a member of the Nuclear Chemistry Laboratory (NCL) section of the Laboratory of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry (INC). NCL is mandated to provide surveillance of natural and anthropogenic radioactivity for the purpose of radiological health protection in New York. I have several significant roles in this laboratory. My main mandated responsibility is to supervise the operation of gamma spectrometry and alpha spectrometry at NCL. This involves maintaining the hardware of several HPGe spectrometers, liquid scintillation detectors, gas proportional detectors, alpha spectrometers, and Frisch Grid Ion chamber. Also doing calibrations and performance checks, as well as standardizing these spectrometers, with NIST-traceable sources. Another responsibility is to serve as a Radiological Emergency Officer for the NCL section. The work involves calibration and maintenance of all radiation surveillance meters, as well as NaI detectors for screening of radioactivity. During radiological emergencies and exercises, I supervise sample screening and analysis of emergency samples. My extensive research work in radiological sciences involves participating in and conducting research and development projects in many facets of radiation measurements as well as participating in external programs such as Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) agreements with the US FDA. I also teach radiological physics to graduate and Master's students at the School of Public Health, SUNY, Albany.
Experience

Exploring and developing new research areas and projects; designing and conducting experiments and/or research; interpreting results; contributing scientific data for papers and/or posters; writing manuscripts for peer review; presenting results at meetings (talks or posters, both internal and external); reviewing manuscripts for scientific journals.
Defining conditions of analysis; optimizing accuracy and precision; devising methods to handle special samples; validating new methods (internally or externally developed) for their utility in environmental applications. Preparative and Analytical Techniques: applied to samples, standards and/or controls; set-up and operation of instruments; equipment maintenance and design innovations; use of software for data acquisition.
Project Management and Supervisory Skills: allocating resources (such as budget, staff, equipment and space) and workloads; determining priorities and deadlines; identifying the need for improvement; keeping informed of advances in specific research areas, analytical methods and instrumentation, and implementing improvements whenever possible; evaluating capabilities, designing specifications of new equipment and software; playing a role in laboratory or Center-wide quality assurance activities.
