HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Lead Horticulturist supervises crews engaged in a wide variety of horticultural duties, both skilled and unskilled.

Lead Horticulturist consistently demonstrates leadership in supporting and mentoring staff, as well as cultivating positive relationships with internal and external customers.


WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Schedules, supervises, and inspects
  • Participates in the work of gardening crews
  • Mows, edges, irrigates, and fertilizes lawns
  • Fertilizes and cultivates plantings and shrubs
  • Prepares new areas for planting
  • Plants and transplants
  • Nurtures seedlings and other new plantings
  • Collects seeds
  • Understands department Mission and Vision Statements
  • Answers questions from the public
  • Conducts tours when needed
  • Travels to offsite campuses and other areas in the field
  • Drives motorize vehicles on and off grounds
  • Model for punctuality and professionalism
  • Exemplifies the highest standard of work ethics
  • Performs consistently above Society performance standards

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Lead Horticulturist should be able to communicate and work effectively with others, work in a team environment and motivate others, multi-task and prioritize, give directions effectively, deal tactfully and courteously with others in a diverse environment, perform each Essential job function at a high level.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

  • JOB EXPERIENCE
  • Four years of work experience is preferred. Education, training and/or experience which would clearly demonstrate the essential knowledge and skills listed; an example of which would be four or more years of experience in commercial gardening, supplemented by specialized horticultural training
  • EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Current valid California Driver's license in good standing
  • SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
  • Methods of soil conditioning, testing and preparation
  • Proper watering techniques
  • Equipment operation and safety precautions
  • Plant classification, identification, and maintenance requirements
  • Plant propagation
  • Layout of the Zoo or Safari Park
  • Effective customer relations skills
  • Effective leadership skills
  • Principles and practices of training and supervision
  • Communicate and work effectively with others
  • Work in a team environment and motivate others
  • Multitask and prioritize
  • Give directions effectively
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with others in a diverse environment

IMPORTANT DETAILS

  • Location: Escondido, CA
  • Position Type: Hourly Full-Time Non-Exempt Union Position
  • If selected, there will be fees and dues to be paid to the union
  • Hourly Rate: $29.81
