    Immediate opening for a full-time entry- to mid-level staff attorney with the Human Trafficking Prevention Project (HTPP), which works in partnership with Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS).

    The HTPP provides free legal services to sex workers, survivors of human trafficking and those put at highest risk of exploitation in an attempt to address the collateral consequences of their involvement with the criminal and civil legal systems and prevent future exploitation.

    This position is grant funded for two years and is currently housed at the University of Baltimore School of Law.


    The HTPP is seeking a highly motivated candidate with legal and project management skills to provide criminal record relief services to clients, including criminal record expungement, shielding, and vacatur, as well as name and gender marker changes and claims under the Debt Bondage Relief Act.

    The project also includes significant community outreach, education and training components.

    Key Responsibilities:


    Assist the Senior Staff Attorney in coordinating and executing the HTPP's community/client outreach efforts and project activities at community partner agencies; screen all potential clients for project eligibility and complete intakes for HTPP legal assistance; in coordination with the Project Director and Senior Staff Attorney, conduct educational presentations, prepare outreach materials, and develop client referral relationships with other service providers; make client referrals as appropriate.


    Provide individual representation to sex workers, survivors of trafficking, and those populations put at highest risk of exploitation in criminal record relief cases including, but not limited to, expungement, shielding, vacatur and pardon cases, as well as name and gender marker changes and claims for relief under the Debt Bondage Relief Act.


    Assist the Project Director and Senior Staff Attorney in the development and execution of an outreach plan to connect the HTPP with additional community-based service providers in Southern and Western Maryland, as well as the Eastern Shore.


    Meet client intake and case placement goals as required by the grant and established by the HTPP Project Director; timely enter client data in CLIO case management system and ensure that each client's case file includes relevant documents and up-to-date casenotes; assist Senior Staff Attorney in tracking and reporting efforts for grant reporting purposes, including accurately maintaining necessary records to meet reporting requirements required by the funders; assist with grant writing as needed.

    Required Education and Experience

    Education:
    J.D. from an accredited law school



    Experience:

    Admitted to the Maryland Bar or sitting for the July 2024 Maryland Bar Exam or other UBE state. Demonstrated commitment to public interest

    Experience:


    • Prior experience working with human trafficking survivors and/or other populations put at high risk of exploitation, such as those trading sex, living in poverty, experiencing homelessness, and/or those struggling with substance use disorder.
    • Prior community outreach and/or harm reduction experience
    • Experience navigating public systems, such as the education, child welfare, or juvenile and/or adult criminal legal systems
    • Fluency, written and oral, in Spanish
    • Experience with record-keeping for state and/or federal grants
    • Familiarity with legal case management software
    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


    • Experience with legal research, writing, and/or court appearances
    • History of demonstrated initiative in leading projects or activities
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
    • Ability to work independently and with a team
    • Able to work with diverse client populations
    • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
    • This position requires frequent travel throughout Maryland. Valid driver's license required.
