- Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the classroom teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
- Under the direction of the classroom teacher, assists in implementing instructional programs and lesson plans (e.g. reading, math, language comprehension, writing, computer, etc.) for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts. This may also include data collection and documentation.
- Under the direction of the classroom teacher, provides instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g. self-esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills, etc.) for the purpose of implementing goals for remediation of student weaknesses and ensuring student's success. This may also include data collection and documentation.
- Under the direction of the classroom teacher, implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavioral needs or other special conditions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts. This may also include data collection and documentation.
- Participates in the implementation of the IEP goals for the purpose of meeting IEP goals and/or district benchmarks under the direction of the classroom teacher. This may also include data collection and documentation.
- Participates in the implementation of student behavior plans for the purpose of ensuring effective and safe student learning, this may also include data collection.
- Performs clerical tasks (e.g. making copies, filing, etc.) for the purpose of helping the teacher get instructional materials ready.
- Attends meetings and professional development (e.g. first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, behavior management, CPI, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
- Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g. diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication, etc.) for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs. This may also include data collection and documentation.
- Assists students with personal care tasks, including but not limited to, bathroom, clothing, hygiene, toileting to support developing student's daily living activities. This may also include data collection and documentation.
- Applies and removes physical therapy appliances as instructed by the service provider (e.g. body braces, leg braces, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the student has the proper equipment according to the IEP plan. This may also include data collection and documentation.
- Assists students in and out of wheelchairs; loading and unloading on the bus; transporting students in their wheelchairs in and around school and on field trips for the purpose of ensuring the student gets to and from school and to the proper places safely. This may also include data collection and documentation.
- Assists students with mobility needs such as, lifting and positioning students. This may also include data collection and documentation.
- Assists students under the direction of the classroom teacher or service provider by enabling them to access their electronic communicators, switches, pointers, feeder, etc. for the purpose of ensuring equipment is hooked up properly and functioning properly. This may also include data collection and documentation.
- Assists with pre-lunch and lunch activities (e.g. collect lunch money, feeding, etc.) for the purpose of helping the student with lunch routines and fostering independence with those activities as appropriate. There may also be documentation or data collection required during this time.
- Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. lunch, bus, playground, classroom, restroom, field trips, public transportation, assemblies, etc.).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate.
- Some experience working with students with disabilities is preferred.
- Considerable patience and the ability to work with students who have physical, cognitive and behavior challenges.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
- Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. email, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tools and other electronic tools implemented in the future).

- Successful completion of 30 semester hour credits earned after July 1, 1993 from a Regionally Accredited college or university.
- New hires or transfers who have successfully achieved the Highly-Qualified ParaEducator status through successful completion of the ParaPro assessment or post-secondary education in accordance with the mandated requirements for Title I and/or relevant laws in place are eligible for placement at grade 6. However, placement in grade 6 is contingent on having met the aforementioned requirements and the school's Title I status. Grade placement may be reduced if the school no longer qualifies as Title I and/or you voluntarily transfer to a non-Title I Teacher Assistant position.
