Description

GENERAL PURPOSE
Provides for effective maintenance and mechanical service for water utility service. Utilize troubleshooting abilities to solve minor utility problems.

Operates transports and assists in the operation of backhoes, front end loaders, tractors, dump trucks and a variety of light and heavy equipment used in the repair, construction and replacement of the City's distribution water system and related requirements.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general guidance and direction of the Water Maintenance Supervisor.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Supervise Laborer and Equipment Operator I.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates light and semi-heavy equipment, operates trucks and trailers to transport equipment to and from work sites.
  • Operates a variety of power tools to complete repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Responsible for shoring and sloping excavations.
  • Maintains water facilities, renews water utility services to designated areas. Notifies the customer of the type of maintenance required to repair, restore or terminated service.
  • Observes safety regulations by wearing required safety clothing and equipment and using required safety devices.
  • Repairs and maintains water mains, taps and meters.
  • Prepares, cleans and operates trucks and other equipment.
  • Maintains and repairs fire hydrants.
  • Backfill, level and resod maintenance sites.
  • Maintains records and completes work orders.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

  • Assists in the delivery of garbage bags.
  • External interaction is infrequent but involves routine information exchange and service activity which required common courtesy and answering simple questions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
(A)High school diploma or GED equivalent, and
(B)Two (2) hears experience in repair and maintenance of a water distribution
system.


Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A)Skilled in the operation of backhoes, front end loaders,
dump trucks, pumps, air compressors, hand tools and other equipment
used in the repair of a water distribution system.
(B)Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow written and oral
instructions.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Valid State Driver's license.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Backhoe, front end loader, trackhoe, generator, boring machine, dump truck, pumps, air compressor and a variety of hand tools.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position required stooping, bending and/or lifting of items up to 100 pounds, with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Routine exposure to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. This position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.
