Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director, this position is responsible for providing high quality, individualized patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse and physicians.

The LVN provides direct patient care activities, administers medications and treatments, and implements the plan of care established by the Registered Nurse with the primary responsibility to assist the registered nurses and healthcare team in delivering safe and efficient care throughout the labor and delivery process.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians.
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of labor and delivery rooms, ensuring they are clean, wellstocked, and equipped with necessary supplies.
  • Monitor maternal vital signs, fetal heart rate, and uterine contractions, reporting any abnormalities or changes to the healthcare team.
  • Assist with the admission, assessment, and triage of patients, ensuring accurate documentation of patient history, symptoms, and progress. Notify Registered Nurse immediately of any abnormalities
  • Administer medications and assist with pain management techniques as directed by the healthcare team.
  • Assist with the implementation of individualized care plans, including monitoring and documenting progress, and reporting any concerns to the registered nurse
  • Provide emotional support and comfort to laboring mothers and their families, promoting a positive and reassuring environment
  • Assist with newborn care, including initial assessments, measurements, and basic procedures such as weighing, bathing, and dressing.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure effective communication and coordination of care.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and safety guidelines, maintaining a high standard of professional conduct.
  • Performing duties in a manner that provides for the physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of the patient including assisting in completing initial gathering of necessary data in a timely manner; performing ongoing monitoring when warranted by the patient's condition. Incorporates cultural and ethnic factors into patient care approaches; correctly differentiating between normal and abnormal findings; and incorporates the functional/developmental age into patient care approaches for the obstetrical patient population.
  • Using hospital and regulatory standards of care, the LVN demonstrates sound clinical judgment in assisting with evaluation of the nursing aspects of the transdisciplinary care plan. In conjunction with the patient/family and the registered nurse, the LVN participates in developing an individualized patient care plan and implementing interventions based on findings. The LVN gathers data and reports patient outcomes on an ongoing basis, follows through on established priorities for patient care services as evidenced by modification of the care as directed by the registered nurse in formulating the care plan, if necessary, and demonstrates the ability to accurately document patient care activities in the patients' medical record. Provides routine pre[1]operative and postoperative nursing care.
  • Participating in a case management approach, the LVN coordinates and collaboratively incorporates the aspects of patient care across the continuum by effectively communicating with physicians, staff and other disciplines.
  • Safely and competently administers pharmacotherapeutics adhering to medication policies, procedures, practices and standards, and monitors and reports the resultant outcomes based upon the patient's response to treatment.
  • Acts appropriately to ensure patient safety based on the physical environment, equipment and the patient's behavior.
  • Total responsibility on providing medications under direction of the supervising Nurse.
  • Demonstrating the ability to provide care in emergency situations and following established emergency procedures and practices.
  • Communicating and following the organizational chain of command for notification of patient care/service issues, when appropriate.
  • Maintaining knowledge of, and implements patient care activities to promote, maintain and/or restore health for the obstetrical patient population as described in policies/procedures including the skills compet
