Custodian
Required Qualifications
Ø
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Knowledge of
- Principles of sanitation and safety procedures
- Cleaning methods and proper use and care of cleaning materials & equipment
- Good oral and written communication skills
Ability to
- Understand and implement both oral and written instructions
- Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency
- Perform heavy physical labor
- Perform minor building maintenance and repair work
- Perform daily routines with minimum or no supervision
- Cooperate with staff and offer assistance when possible, notifying principal of staff desires for repairs, installations, or furniture moves
- Maintain confidentiality
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Ø Under general direction, job involves performance of routine cleaning and maintenance work on school equipment and buildings.
Ø Job activities include:
Ø Sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, oiling and buffing floors; vacuuming rugs and carpets
Ø Operating floor scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, buffers and other powered cleaning equipment
Ø Cleaning and disinfecting lavatories, drinking fountains and waste containers
Ø Cleaning and polishing chrome in restrooms & kitchens
Ø Dusting, washing, waxing and polishing furniture, woodwork and countertops
Ø Refilling toilet paper and paper towel holders
Ø Non technical repair and maintenance of buildings or equipment: replacing light fixtures, repairing door closers and stops, cleaning toilet valves, replacing broken tile, cleaning sink traps, cleaning roof drains and resetting clocks, painting.
Ø Moving and rearranging chairs, tables, desks and other furniture and equipment
Ø Cleaning blackboards and whiteboards
Ø Washing windows
Ø Set-up and cleanup for special events
Ø Order, store and account for custodial supplies
Ø Routine grounds maintenance; sweep sidewalks, water lawns, shrubs and trees, pull weeds
During summer months, major cleaning of school buildings is required, including stripping/waxing floors, high cleaning, high dusting and working from ladders.
Physical Demands
Terms used in this section are defined as follows: Rarely= 1 to 10%; Occasionally= 11 to 33%;
Frequently= 34 to 66%; and Continuously= 67 to 100%

Lift/Carry:
Frequently, 1-10 lbs. weights moved up to 100 yards at a time
Occasionally, 11-50 lbs. weights moved 20 to 30 feet at a time Occasionally, often with assistance, weights over 50 feet moved several feet at a time

Push/Pull:
Continuously, using both hands and arms while using buffers, mopping, dust mopping, moving furniture and materials exerting a force of 15 to 35 pounds.
Occasionally exert push/pull force up to 60-75 lbs. while moving heavy furniture, filing cabinets, etc.Ø
Climbing:
Rarely; ladders up to a distance of 12 feet while cleaning upper areas or changing lights.
Ø
Balancing:
Rarely; while working at heights while cleaning or changing lights
Ø
Bending/Twisting:
Constantly, with forward flexion at waist while vacuuming, sweeping/mopping and cleaning and side to side twisting and flexion extension of neck throughout work shift.
Ø
Kneeling/Crouching:
Occasionally; while cleaning lower areas, retrieving supplies from lower shelves.
Ø
Hands/Arms:
Frequent to Continuous use in forward reaching/handling, simple & power grasping/fingering while operating equipment, wiping and cleaning surfaces and while using hand tools and other cleaning equipment.
Occasional above shoulder reaching required.Ø
Sight:
Continuously; in performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards on the job. Requires depth perception, hand/eye coordination required in operation of equipment and tool use.
- Must have normal vision, corrected or uncorrected.
Ø
Speech/Written Communication:
Frequently; to interact with co-workers, teachers, supervisors and students and record data.
Mental Demands
Ø Must be able to work independently and follow through on all work as assigned.
Ø Must be able to communicate with co-workers and supervisor and establish/maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, district personnel and the public.
Ø Must be able to read, write and speak English, follow an assigned work schedule and perform basic mathematical calculations.
WORK CONDITIONS
The following conditions are present:
Ø Exposure to fumes from cleaning solutions, floor stripper and waxes
Ø Exposure to dust, dirt and wetness and slippery surfaces
Ø Exposure to biohazards when cleaning restrooms and cleaning up bodily fluids
Ø Exposure to temperature variation
