    ABOUT THE POSITION
    The Riverside County Sheriff Coroner's Bureau has an opportunity for multiple Deputy Coroner I/II positions in Perris and Indio.

    The incumbents will be responsible for conducting investigations to determine the cause and mode of death, and the identity of decedents in cases under the Coroner's jurisdiction.

    Additionally, the Deputy Coroners will be responsible for ordering autopsies or requesting other services, testifying in court, preparing reports, and performing other related work as required.

    The most competitive candidates will possess experience in a mortuary, medical environment, or law enforcement/military agency. Additionally, candidates that possess volunteer experience with the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner's Bureau are also desired .

    The law enforcement professionals of the Riverside County Sheriff'sOffice, with a staff of over 3,600 dedicated men and women, cover the expanse of over 7,300 square miles in southern California.

    EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    • Receives reports of death from physicians, law enforcement agencies, hospital personnel, and other persons; determines whether the case is within the legal jurisdiction of the Coroner.
    • Initiates investigation at the scene of death to determine if death is due to homicide, suicide, accident, or from non-traumatic causes; secures physical, scientific, and pathological evidence such as clothing, weapons, drugs, bodily fluids, specimens, and liver temperatures; photographs physical evidence and the scene of death.
    • Fingerprints decedent; attempts to verify the identity of the decedent; interviews witnesses; locates and notifies relatives of the death; requests identification specialists for assistance in criminal or special cases.
    • Speaks with physicians regarding the decedent's medical history; checks medical records and other sources to gather information necessary to ascertain the cause of death.
    • Orders autopsies or requests other services from toxicologists, bacteriologists, and other skilled examiners to aid in determining an exact cause of death.
    • Determines if case falls within the jurisdiction of the Deputy Public Administrator; notifies the Deputy Public Administrator or acts as ex-officio Public Administrator evenings, weekends, or holidays.
    • Testifies in court; prepares and writes reports clearly and concisely.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:

    Graduation from high school, possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D.

    Experience:
    None


    Knowledge of:

    Procedures for gathering information and interviewing techniques; investigative principles and techniques and basic rules of evidence; physiology, anatomy and medical terminology used in describing cause of death.


    Ability to:

    Learn Coroner specific investigative principles and techniques, rules of evidence and physiology, anatomy and terminology used in describing the cause of death; analyze situations and take effective course of action in adverse circumstances; perform physical activities of the position; work under unpleasant conditions; deal effectively with distraught persons in a sympathetic and tactful manner; establish and maintain effective working relationships; attend and pass classes to attain 832 certification and POST certified Coroner's Death Investigation Course.

    $62, $98,953.92 Annually

    Education:

    Graduation from high school, possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D.

    exam.

    Experience:

    One year of conducting investigations in order to determine the cause and mode of death on cases within a Coroner's jurisdiction.


    Knowledge of:

    Investigative principles and techniques including investigative interviewing; rules of evidence; physiology, anatomy and medical terminology used in describing cause of death.


    Ability to:

    Effectively utilize Coroner specific investigative principles and techniques, and follow rules of evidence; prepare correspondence and reports with appropriate physiology, anatomy and medical terminology used in describing the cause of death; analyze situations and take effective course of action in adverse circumstances; perform stringent physical activities of the position; work independently and under unpleasant conditions; deal effectively with distraught persons in a sympathetic and tactful manner; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
