Essential Functions:


Responsible for overseeing substance testing, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) testing, evaluating fentanyl strip testing, and xylazine strip testing, as well as providing feedback on the results.

Under the direct supervision of the Harm Reduction Program Manager, this position is responsible for all technical functions regarding the Harm Reduction Services Expansion Program.

This position will include 6-9 months of training for the technician to become familiar with the machine and programmatic capacity.


Drug Checking Technician Responsibilities:


  • Operating within all applicable guidelines.
  • Staying current with all professional and safety training and licensure, as appropriate.
  • Ensure testing program is set up and administered.
  • Equipment installation, removal, and maintenance.
  • Assist to review and resolve all scheduled maintenance alerts.
  • Assist to review and resolve all communication alerts.
  • Report all alerts and violations in a timely manner according to program protocols.
  • Maintain inventory and physical control of all equipment at all locations as required. Report any lost or stolen equipment immediately to the Harm Reduction Program Manager or Program Director of Behavioral Health Services.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the Harm Reduction Program Manager and Program Director of Behavioral Health Services regarding any concerns with the daily operations.
  • Work with HAS program staff and external entities involved with electronic monitoring.
  • Clean equipment according to procedures and secure the equipment in the inventory.
  • Perform drug testing, following all chain of custody and specific program protocols in Cook County.
  • Check and stock inventory of all drug testing supplies and alert Supervisor of low inventory.
  • Perform testing and troubleshooting of electronic equipment and system.
  • Follow test procedures and protocols to ensure accurate and reliable results.
  • Record and analyze test data, identifying any abnormalities or issues.
  • Maintain and calibrate testing equipment as needed.
  • Document test results and provide reports to management.

Drug Checking Technician Qualifications:


  • Strong organizational, communication, and critical thinking skills, including the ability to work as part of a collaborative treatment team.
  • Basic knowledge of computer keyboard.
  • Bilingual/Bicultural is preferred (English/Spanish).
  • Previous experience as a Test Technician or in a similar role is highly desirable.
  • Excellent problemsolving skills and attention to detail.
  • H.A.S. requires all staff to work onsite.

Education and Experience Requirements:


  • Familiarity with immunoassay point of care testing strips (FTS, XTS, BTS, etc.) and FTIR instruments.
  • Trained to operate and interpret FTIR instrument results.
  • Expertise in analytical techniques.
  • Experience with managing webbased software and data entry preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or from a regionally accredited educational institution which has U.S. Department of Education approval; or a minimum of two years in college working on degree is preferred.
