Position Summary:
The VP of Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer responsible for the development, quality, and advancement of the seminary's educational programs, including recruiting and overseeing its faculty, curriculum, library, student life, and assessment as well as being the principal liaison with accrediting and licensing agencies.
As a member of Cabinet, the VP of Academic Affairs also takes part in strategic planning, operational oversight, and general governance of the institution.
Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesExecutive Functions
* participate in the strategic planning process with the President and VP of Operations under the supervision of the Board of Directors
* carry out decisions established by the Board of Directors, its committees, and the President
* submit reports & prepare presentations for the Board of Directors as called upon
* work with President to ensure continued doctrinal fidelity to the historic orthodox faith represented in the seminary's documents
* represent the seminary at external functions and events as called upon
Accreditation and Assessment
Work with Officer of Educational Effectiveness to:
* submit reports as necessary to educational associations, accrediting, and government agencies
* ensure accreditation standards are maintained, including self-study processes and the implementation of recommendations resulting from those studies
* keep abreast of the regulatory requirements of the Association of Theological Schools, the Higher Learning Commission, and the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education
* ensure that the seminary is in compliance with DOE regulations and other relevant federal policies
Strategic Initiatives
* lead development of online education
* investigate ways to expand Hispanic Studies programs
* continue to build the Ministry Apprenticeship Alliance
* oversee mentoring program and participate in mentoring students as time permits
Faculty Oversight
* lead all faculty meetings
* guide faculty in discussion on curricular matters and implement changes
* administer annual evaluations
* supervise faculty recruiting as the need arises
* oversee promotion processes and sabbatical requests
* provide orientation for new faculty
* as a member of the faculty, teach according to the agreed upon course load
Students & Programs
* develop new programs as needed in consultation with the faculty
* explore cooperative programs with other seminaries and institutions
* oversee student learning outcomes assessment and implement improvements when necessary
* be aware of relevant trends and developments in seminary and higher education
* participate in student recruitment events as able
* provide general oversight of the planning, development, evaluation, and implementation of all educational programs and curricula and assure their quality, relevancy, adherence to budget, and operating efficiency
* study educational trends, issues, and developments nationally and in the seminary, including enrollment data, demographic and student learning trends, degree programs, tuition costs, etc.
Administration
* supervise the preparation and revision of internal governing documents including the Academic Catalog and both Faculty and Student Handbooks
* prepare annual budget
* control prepared budgets as linked to the strategic plan of the seminary
* serve on committees as assigned by the President
Qualifications
Required
* theologically compatible with the Seminary's Statement of Faith
* high personal and professional integrity consistent with Biblical standards, the Statement of Faith, and governing values of the seminary
* high degree of institutional loyalty and the capability of protecting the confidentiality of sensitive matters related to the institution
* support the vision and mission of Phoenix Seminary
* academic doctoral degree (PhD, ThD) in a field relevant to graduate theological education
* effective administrative and relational skills
* able to research, plan, and implement new initiatives
* identify problems and use relevant data and information to propose and implement solutions
* communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in written form
* commitment to teamwork, servant leadership, and appropriate empowerment of subordinates
* ability to develop trust in relationships
* maintain stability under pressure or opposition
* self-starter, working well without close supervision
* achieve goals as a result of focus, discipline, and high levels of performance
Preferred
* pastoral experience
* significant graduate teaching experience
* record of publications commensurate with time spent in graduate theological education
* active membership in the relevant academic societies
* prior experience in academic administration
* familiarity with accreditation processes
Physical Requirements
* able to sit using a computer for long periods of time
* able to lift up to 25 pounds at times
