Description

Job Title:
Instrument Operator (I-Man)

Summary/Objective:

GeoPoint Surveying, Inc. is a land surveying firm with multiple locations, specializing in land development, remote sensing, energy, geospatial mapping, commercial surveys, and subsurface utility engineering.

A typical survey crew consists of a Crew Chief, an
Instrument Operator (I-Man) and one or two Rodman Persons.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Load and unload the survey vehicle of equipment and supplies, including but not limited to bundles of wooden hubs and lathes, concrete monuments, survey equipment including heavy boxed instruments, and large water coolers
  • Fill the survey vehicle with gas and check the fluid levels, such as water and oil
  • Check truck tire pressure and look for mechanical problems, such as broken headlights and taillights
  • Carry items including, but not limited to, bundles of hubs and lathes, concrete monuments, and equipment through the woods, brush and mud, water, and swamps to various points on the job site. This often requires lengthy periods of walking up to one half mile from the survey vehicle. The bundles of hubs and lathes are heavy and awkward, and the monuments weigh up to thirty pounds each
  • Use a machete to cut line, i.e., clearing heavy brush and foliage out of the way so that the Instrument Operator (I-Man) has an unobstructed view of the target. This often entails walking in hostile terrain filled with holes, high grass, unseen hazards, snakes, insects, and water
  • Pound hubs into the ground which requires regular kneeling and stooping. This is one of the most frequently performed activities
  • Dig holes to locate the underground utilities to bury the concrete monuments by using a shovel or post hole digger that can place a lot of pressure on the knees
  • Lift steel manholes lids and curb inlet grates to get inverts of pipes for asbuilt drawings. These covers weigh seventyfive pounds or more. This activity requires kneeling and squatting at every manhole
  • Responsible for all instruments and supporting equipment including, but not limited to, transits, levels, and E.D.M tripods, and the E.D.M. support box, and radios
  • Technical knowledge and competence in the use of survey equipment such as the data collector, the robotic instrument, the Theodolite, and the level.
  • Daily dumping of the data collector (transfer data from one system to another)
  • The ability to take over the crew in the absence of the Party Chief
  • The ability to follow the instructions of the Party Chief in obtaining staking data
  • The ability to read and understand staking sheets, boundary surveys, construction plans, cut sheets, level notes, and bench runs
  • The ability to traverse, do tree locations, wetlands, and occupational scaling including utilities, buildings, and other site plan information
  • The ability to do calculations as needed for construction and miscellaneous surveying
  • Responsible for recommending crew members for promotions, disciplinary action, and/or dismissal

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently sit, stand, or walk
  • May lift, carry, push, or pull objects of various weights
  • May reach, kneel, crouch, bend, twist, pound, or dig
  • Focus completely on drawings and/or computer screens
  • Some other physical demands may come up
  • Able to work overtime and some weekends
