Short Description

The IDD (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) Medical Assistant (MA) is an integral part of Cooper University Health Care's IDD program.

The IDD Program team will assist IDD providers on the mobile van by navigating to destination, assist in provision of care, interacting with office, setting up referrals, trouble shooting, assisting with care delivery, and following up as needed.

When not on the van, the MA will assist with hospital and ambulatory patients by rounding to ensure that the IDD patients get the best possible evidence-based care, make suggestions on request for our team to assist in the care of the patient.

As a patient-facing position, the MA will interact with IDD patients, families and support persons, offering appropriate, available resources to improve the patient's experience.

The goal of Cooper's IDD program is to create a destination of healthcare for patients in our region and nationally to receive world class quality care.

Experienced in working with challenging behaviors in the IDD ASD population. Adapts to stressful situations and can make quick changes.

Makes appointments for all programs and ensures appointment agenda and other important documents are prepared for all upcoming appointments. Ensure consents and insurance is in system. Secures insurance authorizations as appropriate for medi Medications/procedures in a timely manner.

Collaborate and participate in visits with mobile IDD providers to offer evidence-based care to IDD patients off-site.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

appropriately documenting in EMR patient vitals, medical history, records current medications, performing injections, phlebotomy & EKG, and managing a variety of different patient behaviors.

Ensures appointment documentation and follow-up needs are communicated to the individual, family, and other important staff.

Follows up on testing/other medical procedures to obtain results and ensures providers have documents to review results.
Cleans, disinfects, and maintains organization on mobile unit.

Maintains exceptional patient and staff relations to optimize workflow efficiency.- Communicates well.

While in-house, visit patients & support persons on the IIDD Medical Registry to evaluate and anticipate needs to create a consistent and valued patient experience using available resources.

Participate in patient experience meetings and help lead action plans initiated by patient & support person feedback.


Collaborates with the Program Manager, Learning and Development team, Clinical Education, and Child Life services to develop and deliver formal and just in time efforts to provide Cooper Team members with the skills they need to better care for our IIDD patients.

Work with external community experts to evolve sensory tools and resources provided to patients.
