Engineering Assistant I ($79,200 - $96,264 annually / $3,300 - $4,011 semi-monthly)

Engineering Assistant II ($89,544 - $108,840 annually / $3,731 - $4,535 semi-monthly)

ABOUT THE POSITION:

This classification is part of a flexible series.

At the discretion of the appointing authority, incumbents appointed at the Engineering Assistant I level may be promoted to an Engineering Assistant II after acquiring four (4) years of experience with the City of Monterey as an Engineering Assistant I OR after five (5) years of prior related experience and a minimum of one (1) year as a City of Monterey Engineering Assistant I.

SUMMARY:

Under the responsible charge of a licensed engineer, to perform sub professional level engineering office and fieldwork; and to do related work as required.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:


Engineering Assistant I:
This the journey-level in the City engineering series. Positions assigned to this class are expected to perform responsible and difficult types of engineering office and field work. All positions assigned to this class require the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative. Engineering Assistant I may also be expected to assist in the supervision and training of technical staff.

Incumbents may progress from Engineering Assistant I to Engineering Assistant II after: a) Four (4) years of experience with the City of Monterey or b) Five (5) years of prior related experience the meet the qualification standards for an Engineering Assistant I, including one (1) year with the City of Monterey as an Engineering Assistant I.

Recommendation for advancement is required by both the supervisor and department head.

Engineering Assistant II:
This is the senior-level class in the City engineering series not requiring registration.

Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full scope of intermediate to advanced assignments and are expected to direct them to completion, including planning, design, coordination, construction, plan review and inspection of public works.

Incumbents may serve as lead for assigned technical project staff.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The duties, knowledge and abilities of the Engineering Assistant I and Engineering Assistant II are the same except the work is generally done under supervision; as experience is gained, greater independence of action is increased and less detailed supervision is received until the incumbent is performing with the abilities and experience required of an Engineering Assistant II._
  • Participate in the preparation of plans and specifications for the construction of streets, wastewater collection, storm drains, potable water, recycled water systems, transportation systems and related public works projects.
  • Assist in conducting preliminary studies of engineering projects and help prepare plans for streets, storm drains, sewers, transportation and other public works projects.
  • Coordinate review, approval, and construction of projects with staff, other departments, applicable outside agencies and citizens.
  • Collect engineering data, make calculations and perform drafting involved in the preparation of maps, drawings, profiles, easements, rightsofway and related matters.
  • Tabulate field data.
  • Design routine engineering structures and prepare specifications, contracts and other documents.
  • Perform field observations in the absence of an inspector.
  • Prepare preliminary and final cost estimates.
  • Assist in training sub professional engineering personnel in drafting and engineering calculations.
