    Job Description

    The Utah Department of Transportation, Traffic & Safety Division, is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to fill the role of Barrier/Attenuation Specialist (Research Consultant III). To be successful in this role you will need a mixture of technical knowledge and communication skills as you support and coordinate with Region staff.

    Principal Duties
    As the Barrier/Attenuation Specialist, you will:
    • Serve as a technical expert on roadside safety hardware, including:
      • Barrier, guardrail, end treatments, crash attenuators, and related hardware.
      • Crashworthy supports for signs, poles, mailboxes, and other related hardware.
  • Provide guidance and support to designers, maintenance personnel, consultants, contractors, and project teams for issues related to roadside safety hardware.
  • Help maintain UDOT Standard Drawings in the BA Series, and other drawings that relate to roadside safety hardware.
  • Help maintain UDOT Standard Specifications relating to roadside safety hardware.
  • Help develop and maintain UDOT Design Manual drawings relating to roadside safety hardware.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of roadside safety hardware. This will include working with contracted data providers to ensure quality of data collected.
  • Help UDOT Regions prioritize replacement of obsolete roadside safety hardware.
  • Review roadside safety products that are included or proposed for inclusion within the Approved Products List.
  • Act as UDOT's representative in several Pooled Fund Studies related to roadside safety hardware; help write/review/prioritize problem statements for crashworthiness testing of new equipment.
  • Help ensure that roadside safety hardware used in Utah is crashworthy; maintain lists of crashworthy equipment.
  • The Ideal Candidate
    The best qualified person will have:
    • A Bachelor's degree in a related field OR equivalent experience.
    • Excellent communication skills.

    • Working Conditions - While the typical risks are those of an office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., there will be field work.
    • Physical Requirements: Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some field work which may include walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
    • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader
