Government Relations Counsellors develop, manage and execute strategies on our clients' behalf; independently identify strategic objectives and tactics; manage routine client interactions; draft messaging and multiple types of content; maintain excellent internal and external relationships; and contribute to programming and business development.

This position is offered for full-time work based in our office in Washington, DC, with arrangements for hybrid working.


Position description


The Government Relations Counsellor will support clients in tailored government relations-focused retainers and through the Washington International Business Council (WIBC).

Working independently and in cross-functional teams, the Government Relations Counsellor will maintain robust understanding of political, economic, and trade issues and dynamics impacting Red Flag's clients and may contribute to cross-functional strategic communications and public affairs integration.


The Government Relations Counsellor will proactively identify engagement opportunities with existing and prospective clients, assess evolving situations, and advise colleagues and clients on how to meet objectives.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring and analyzing Congressional hearings, legislation, and other developments that impact Red Flag clients
  • Maintaining working relationships with Congressional offices and staff
  • Preparing clientfacing reports and briefings and contributing to Red Flag's weekly client newsletter and other publications
  • Conducting political and policy research at clients' request and/or independently with a focus on international business and trade
  • Ensuring compliance with lobbying registration requirements, where relevant
  • Contributing to WIBC programming
  • Contributing to WIBC member retention and recruitment and development of retained business

Required Skills and Experience

  • 510 years' experience in international economic affairs, preferably with demonstrated experience in trade/commercial policy and Congressional affairs
  • Strong knowledge of the U.S. executive branch and legislative processes
  • A proven ability to learn quickly and communicate effectively on a wide range of policy and business topics
  • Excellent judgement and creative problemsolving skills, as demonstrated in previous roles
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong contacts across business and government
