Position Objective:


Responsible for the efficient and cost effective management of the gift shops, including direct supervision/training of volunteers, with emphasis on providing excellent customer service.


This position has authority to perform supervisory duties including but not limited to hiring, evaluating performance, issuing final disciplinary actions under the review of Human Resources, and recommending discharge in collaboration with members of management and Human Resources.


Essential Job Duties:

  • Oversees daily activities in gift shops. Ensures that there is proper communication flow among gift shop volunteers and staff concerning new products and procedures.
  • Ensures staffing levels (volunteers & paid staff) necessary to keep shops operational. Works with volunteer placement to recruit new volunteers and ensure adequate training and orientation.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves situations involving volunteers and/or services provided by the Volunteer Services Department.
  • Maintains attractive sales displays utilizing stock rotation and merchandising strategies. Including the planning, design, layout, procedures and choices of merchandise to display in all shops. Is the lead person in the implementation of approved designs and merchandise placement.
  • Acts as buyer for gift shop merchandise. Actively seeks out new vendors to ensure a variety of merchandise and works with existing vendors to obtain competitive pricing/terms.
  • Receives products, checking purchase orders, packing lists and invoices to ensure that deliveries are complete, tracking deliveries in the Point of Sale (POS) system, troubleshooting order issues with suppliers, stamp, mark, or tag merchandise as well as facilitate the return of damaged products to vendors. The entry of received products into the Counterpoint POS system, manages the pricing of the merchandise with the goals of customer satisfaction and profit enhancement as well as the timely review and approval of all invoices for payment by the Hospital Financial officer.
  • Determines pricing of all merchandise with the goals of customer satisfaction and profit enhancement. Oversees all cash handling and settlement procedures in all shops.
  • Responsible for timely review and approval of all invoices for payment by the Hospital Gift Shop Treasurer.
  • Responsible for the planning, start up, stocking and displays of gift shops.
  • Responsible for the scheduling and supervision of sixty plus volunteers and staff members in all areas of running the shops, including cash handling, inventory control, proper close out procedures, and upkeep and appearance of all shops.
  • Works closely with hospital staff, including department managers, to ensure that requested merchandise is available for sale in the shops. Closely monitors special requests for items that come in.

Educational/Experience Requirements:


  • High school diploma and good communication skills. Word processing and computer skills desirable.
  • Three years of office experience and one year retail experience preferably in a hospital gift shop.

  • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
