Rate of Pay: $39, $68,806.40-This is skilled work driving large capacity trucks used in transporting solid waste and recyclable materials from transfer stations to disposal sites or processing facilities. Drivers are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of trucks as well as making the necessary maintenance checks and completing required paperwork. Work requires the use of vehicle control skills sufficient to operate large trucks often in unfavorable weather conditions and heavy traffic. Position may require Saturday work. This position reports to the Hazardous Waste Supervisor and requires reliability, dependability and accountability in all aspects of the defined role.


Responsibilities:


  • Operates large capacity trucks transporting solid waste and recyclable materials.
  • Operates trucks and unloads rolloff containers at disposal sites.
  • Inspects equipment before starting, reports malfunctions to Supervisor, and field test equipment after servicing.
  • Keep written records and reports of trips and quantities transported.
  • Provides normal operator maintenance of equipment.
  • Assist Hazardous Materials Technicians in loading trucks, unloading cars, and general cleaning and servicing of Home Chemical Collection facilities.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Skilled in driving medium sized trucks including roll-off and straight trucks.

  • Proper use of the motor vehicle's safety system, including lights, horns, side and rearview mirrors, proper mirror adjustments, fire extinguishers, symptoms of improper operation revealed through instruments, motor vehicle operation characteristics and diagnosing malfunctions.
  • Knowledge of the correct procedures needed to use these safety systems in an emergency situation, e.g. skids and loss of brakes.
  • Ability to operate trucks in a safe and efficient manner on urban highways.
  • Ability to operate light industrial equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and drum dollies in a safe and efficient manner
  • Ability to clean up accidental waste spills.
  • Ability to communicate sufficiently and to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
  • Ability to read and understand DOT and other related regulations; ability to complete required forms.
  • Ability to follow prescribed instructions and work without constant supervision.
  • Ability to perform basic math; add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The physical demands the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and move about on hands, knees or feet, bend body forward and downward and have full motion of lower extremities and back; feel and use hands to finger, handle, reach with hands and arms, push and pull; talk and hear; and smell and climb and balance.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

DOT regulations require medical certification.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Two (2) years' experience driving large capacity commercial vehicles including rolloff trucks preferred.
  • Any combination of experience, education and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES
  • Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B required with valid D.O.T. Certification including air brakes. A 2year Medical Certification
