JOB SUMMARY:


The Carpenter's Helper summer position assists the Head Carpenter in various tasks related to carpentry work, maintenance, and construction projects throughout the summer.

The role involves learning basic carpentry skills, maintaining tools and equipment, and providing support as needed.

This part-time summer position (20-30hrs/wk depending on schedule) is specifically for high school students wanting shop experience before entering the labor field and will include training for all essential functions.


POSITION AUTHORITY:


The incumbent is authorized to take reasonable action necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities, provided such action is consistent with position guidelines as outlined below.


POSITION GUIDELINES:

Position guidelines include, but are not limited to, established company and department policies and procedures and all supervisory directives.

The incumbent is expected to exercise sound, reasonable judgment and initiative, and give high priority to accuracy and details in the performance of job responsibilities.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Assist with and learn to keep shop clean and safe
  • Assist with and learn to perform basic carpentry skills
  • Assist with and learn to use various shop tools and hardware, measure lengths and quantities, and assess needs for repair work or new construction
  • Assist with and learn to finish surfaces and edges to a professional quality
  • Assist with and learn other construction tools and materials as needed

  • In keeping with state and federal Child Labor Laws no person under the age of 18 will operate or assist with operating powerdriven wood working machines including but not limited to powerdriven circular saws, band saws and guillotine shears, abrasive cutting discs, reciprocating saws, chain saws, and wood chippers, or any other equipment specified by the Hazardous Occupation Orders. All approved tool use (predominantly hand tools) will be closely supervised by the Lead Carpenter after safety instructions are given and reviewed.
**In keeping with state and federal Child Labor Laws, no person under the age of 18 will be involved with jobs involving roofing operations or any work on or about a roof.


EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:


  • Must be enrolled in a High School vocational program or recently graduated from High School with a strong interest in skilled trades and be at least 16 years of age.

REQUIRED SKILLS:


  • Must be reliable and responsible
  • Attention to detail and organization
  • Excellent communication and teambuilding skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


  • Ability to work outside in weather extremes including high temperatures during a Texas summer
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring bending, stooping and kneeling
  • Ability to push and pull objects or materials weighing up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, with the ability to reach, often times overhead
  • Ability to grasp, lift, or carry items weighing up to 50 lbs, occasionally waist high
