medical outreach and referrals for medical care, HIV services and drug treatment; health education; psychosocial assessment and intervention; primary medical care; family planning services; and research.


Position Purpose:


Principle Responsibilities:


  • Interviews hires, and trains qualified Peer Support Counselors.
  • Provides initial and ongoing training for staff.
  • Assist in preparing noncertified staff with guidance and training to become certified and
  • Draws upon own personal recovery experience and mental health/substance use
- challenges as a basis for training staff and engagement strategies with clients as peers.

  • Provides a supportive learning environment in which staff can develop skills on how to provide clients and their families with coping mechanisms and problemsolving skills to help them achieve desired outcomes.
  • Develop and educate Peer Support Specialist to lead groups to promote skill building for the clients in the areas of socialization, recovery, selfsufficiency, selfadvocacy, development of natural supports, and maintenance of skills learned in other support services.
  • Lead and train staff to facilitate activities and coaching to encourage and support clients to participate in behavioral health/substance use disorder treatment. Engagement may include supporting clients in their transitions between levels of care and supporting clients in developing their own recovery goals and processes.
  • Develop and lead structured nonclinical activity to promote recovery, wellness, selfadvocacy, relationship enhancement, development of natural supports, selfawareness and values, and the maintenance of community living skills to support the beneficiary's treatment to attain and maintain recovery within their communities.
  • These activities may include but are not limited to, advocacy on behalf of the client; promotion of selfadvocacy; resource navigation; and collaboration with the clients and others providing care or support to the clients, family members, or significant support persons.
  • Educate and train Peer Support Specialist to assist clients with voicing their strengths, interests and goals throughout their services including goal planning, crisis recovery planning, etc.
  • Educates staff to help clients learn and navigate community supports and resources.
  • Educate staff on how to assist clients with all needs including activities of daily living.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Meet outcome expectations outlined in any grants, funding sources, or licensing agencies.
  • Complete all documentation in NextGen or otherwise.
  • Document and report unusual occurrences, incidents, and injuries.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies.
  • Always maintain client confidentiality.

Requirements:


  • Completed a DHCSapproved peer support supervisory training curriculum and meet at least one of the below qualifications:
  • Have a Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification Program certification and two years of experience working in the behavioral health system.
  • Have worked as a nonpeer behavioral health professional (including registered and certified SUD counselors) in the behavioral health system for a minimum of two years.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED and four years of behavioral health direct service experience that may include peer support services.
  • Must take a DHCSapproved peer support supervisory training within 60 days of beginning to supervise Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists and ongoing training incorporated into their continuing education requirements.
  • Have at least 2 years supervising and managing Peer Support Specialist.
  • Knowledge about harm reduction, motivational interviewing, strengthsbased care, participantcentered care, and traumainformed care.
  • Have experience with evidencebased shortterm behavioral health interventions.
  • Able to document using Nextgen or other EMR for all services in an accurate, thorough, and timely manner.
  • Evidence of clear criminal record and proof of valid California Driver's License.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) ability preferred.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
