School/College/Division Description The School of Freshwater Sciences (SFS) at UWM is the only school in the nation dedicated solely to the study of freshwater issues.

Its interdisciplinary research and education programs link science with action and are integrated across five major areas:

freshwater system dynamics; human and ecosystem health; freshwater technology; freshwater economics, policy, and management; and climate and atmospheric sciences.

It is the School's goal to be recognized world-wide as the source of expert knowledge on water issues and a catalyst for great ideas that change how people think about and manage water resources.

The School's primary research vessel is the NEESKAY, a word derived from the Native American Ho-Chunk people's language in Wisconsin, which translates as "pure clean water." Originally a U.S.

Army T-boat, the Neeskay was reconfigured for research (71 ft LOA, 18 ft beam, 8 ft draft, 62.6 net tons displacement) and provides year-round access to the lakes as a fully functional research platform and laboratory.

The Neeskay's research capabilities include wet/dry lab facilities with GPS/sonar display and capabilities for overboard sampling via a starboard hydrographic winch/A-frame and stern winch/A-frame.

The vessel also serves as a platform for ROV deployment, research buoy deployment and research SCUBA diving.

Job Summary The Research Vessel Engineer operates and maintains the mechanical systems necessary to operate the School of Freshwater Sciences research vessel in support of Freshwater's educational and research activities both at sea and in port, assists the Captain with vessel operation, assists faculty, staff, and students in executing safe and efficient field operations, and provides general facility support.

The Research Vessel First Mate assists the Captain with vessel operation while at sea and in port.

While underway these duties include deck operations, standing watch/piloting vessel, operating deck machinery while launching scientific instrumentation, engine room checks and general overall support for faculty, staff and students onboard.

In port duties include routine vessel maintenance (i.e. painting and making repairs) engine room planned maintenance and assisting building staff with large projects.
