Salary, 40 hours/week, Teacher Contract


JOB SUMMARY:
The Transition Teacher has the responsibility of providing in-depth knowledge of a students' development of functional independent skills.

Our goal is for our teacher to have for our students' learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, social growth, and the best teaching practices for special education students with learning differences.

This position will play a critical role in partnering with the Tuttle School Director.


DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES (Including Physical Function)

  • Commitment to The Tuttle's mission, purpose, and culture
  • Strive to inspire a love of the field of study in students.
  • Partner proactively with faculty and administration to support special education students and teachers in their efforts to advance students with learning differences.
  • Direct oneonone or smallgroup instruction.
  • Document progress, assist goals for students
  • Supervising classes to ensure all students are learning in a safe and productive environment.
  • Delivering personalized instruction to each student by encouraging interactive learning.
  • Planning and implementing educational activities and events.
  • Ensuring your classroom is clean and orderly.
  • Attending parentteacher meetings.
  • Evaluating and documenting students' progress.
  • Respond quickly to emergencies in the classroom including but not limited to: Emergency drills and behavioral outbursts.
  • Proficient in collecting data to establish strengths, needs and goals for specially designed instruction based on assessment results.
  • Be a positive role model for students; support the mission of Briarwood and Tuttle School.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with positive behavioral supports and student handbook.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in the staff development program opportunities.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required
  • Work with parents, faculty, and division heads when academic concerns arise regarding students.
  • Implement a focus on technology use and adoption within the School.
  • Represent the school at educational conferences and associations.
  • Participate in any accreditation process for the school.
  • Attend all staff meetings and staff retreats.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Tuttle School or the Head of School.

Design, revise, and maintain a class schedule consisting of activities and lessons that develop students' functional independent skills, such as:

  • Developing a shopping list weekly
  • Grocery shopping weekly
  • Present ULS Transition lessons
  • Write and develop weekly lesson plans
  • Conduct assessments of student achievement
  • Onsite job coaching (grocery store, daycare, restaurant, etc)
  • Coordinates volunteering opportunities
  • Conducts job skill assessments 2 to 3 times a year

Provide instruction and supervision of students doing vocational tasks and on campus jobs, including outside the classroom:

  • Take inventory and stock vending and soda machines bi-monthly
  • Collect recycling from Tuttle and Lower School classrooms weekly and take it to the recycling site bimonthly
  • Clean lunch trays in Life Zones or the teachers' lounge kitchen daily
  • Assist students with personal care daily

Provide transportation for students following school protocols and procedures:

  • Follow procedures for checking out the bus
  • Fuel bus when less than 3⁄4 tank
  • Supervise students' safety getting on and off the bus
  • Supervise students at the community location
  • Take appropriate bus training and turn in certificates of completion

Provide transportation, supervision, instruction, and modeling of appropriate behavior on CBI activities going to:

  • Volunteer centers weekly
  • Recycling centers bimonthly
  • Grocery stores weekly
  • Sam's Club monthly
  • Other supply stores monthly
  • Restaurants weekly
  • Brookwood one day a week

Collaborate and Plan with Transition team and/or community partners:

  • Meet with employers at work-based learning sites before placing students to establish a meaningful learning format
  • Meet with employers bimonthly to go over the job performance of students and give feedback.
