    The Environmental Health and Safety Manager (EHS) is responsible for EHS assessments concentrating on special focus areas like machine safeguarding, hand protection, lockout/tagout (LOTO), management of contractors, risk assessments (chemical & physical hazards).

    The EHS is critical in creating an engaging environment around safety and to establish a safety-oriented culture with strong involvement of each employee.

    The EHS is the lead technical authority as it concerns environmental permitting for Cloverdale processes.

    The EHS will provide guidance & direction to Cloverdale teams, interaction with equipment vendors and raw material suppliers and direct interaction with the state and federal regulatory community.

    THE EHS is responsible for facilitating Process Hazard Reviews and coordinating process inspection and testing programs to ensure that equipment and practices meet code requirements and industry best practices.

    This position requires decision-making, policy formation, and guidance in the context of intimate knowledge regarding manufacturing practices, raw materials, business development objectives, and R&D activities.

    A great level of independent thinking and integration of

    technical/regulatory


    issues is required in order to best advice management officials, purchasing, engineering, and R&D on effective strategies to minimize EHS costs while maintaining an appropriate legal posture, public image, and good employee relations.


    Education and Requirements:

    • BS in Science in Environmental Engineering or related sciences, Biology or Chemistry, and/or Health and Safety. MS will be a plus.
    • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the area of EHS, Security and 3 years of Sustainable practices. Highly preferred experience in food processing or manufacturing environment.
    • Knowledge of FDA, OSHA, EPA, GPM's and Federal and Local regulations.
    • Knowledge of EPA's RCRA Laws and Regulations
    • Credentials as a Registered Environmental Manager [REM], Certified Environmental Auditor [CEA], Certified Industrial Hygienist [CIH], Certified Safety Professional [CSP], and Certified Hazardous Materials Manager [CHMM] are preferred.
    • Knowledge of project management, cost control, and development of guidelines, training's, and programs.
    • Possess excellent interpersonal skills. Capable of effectively communicating new ideas to senior staff and plant management and to all site associates, visitors and contractors.
    • Strong managerial skills. Ability to supervise and motivate employees.
    • Thorough understanding of corporate and legislative EHS & Security requirements which affects the business.
    • Knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts and design.
    • Ability to work independently to establish priorities with a minimum amount of day-to-day direction. Follow through on decisions.
    • Knowledge of ergonomic principles.
    • Ability to creatively integrate engineering concepts into the continued development of EHS & Security programs and systems.
    • Working knowledge of computers and business software (MS Office, MS Project, RedZone, Deacom) required.
    • Strong analytical skills.
    • Fundamental understanding of Lean Manufacturing Principles and implementation of the Six Sigma Quality Initiative process to conduct problem solving projects.
    • Fully bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
    • Travel about 2-3 times a year for a max of 5 days each time.
    • Should be able to respond to plant emergencies 24/7. May have to come in on 2nd and 3rd shift from time to time to resolve issues.
    • Certified OSHA trainer [e.g. 10 Hrs. or 30 Hrs.] is desirable
    Responsibilities


    • Ensures company's compliance with Local and Federal Safety, Health and Environmental Regulations, such as OSHA, USDA, EPA, WSI and other agencies with jurisdiction.
    • Trains staff and plant personnel in EHS and security issues and responsibilities.
    • Develops and implements Environmental, Health, Safety and Security strategies and action plans that ensure plant and corporate sustainable development.
    • Facilitate the development and exchange of best practices to ensure consistent mitigation of risks.
    • Monitor property loss prevention activities, strive to attain and maintain Highly Protected Risk (HPR) status.
    • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert Auditor.
    • Perform EHS & S audits to local and sister plants, as requested.
    • Develops, updates and leads the implementation of EHS and Security policies and procedures.
    • Maintains Management awareness of current and emerging issues concerning Environmental, Health, Safety and Security regulations and projects/programs necessary to avoid infringing the law.
    • Promotes and raise awareness, at all levels of the organization, (example; impact of emerging environmental issues, whether legislative or best practice, or on corporate, ethical and social responsibility).
    • Assures working conditions are healthy, safe and workers adherence to safety measures by frequent visits to all work areas.
    • Audits, analyzes and reports EHS and Security performance to internal and external clients and regulatory agencies, as requested.
    • Coordination and provide support as it relates to special needs or requirements (site expansion, site shutdown, newly acquired sites, loss prevention issues, etc.).
    • Performs Job Hazard Analyses and develops/implement recommended safety improvements.
    • Directs the plant Emergency Response program, appointed as its Incident Commander(IC).
    • Coordinates all aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling, Environmental, Health, Safety, and Sustainable conservation Projects.
    • Prepares manifests and other documents required by regulatory agencies and or other agencies with jurisdiction, such as EPA, OSHA, EPA, etc.
    • Serve as Business/Product Stewardship resource to help
    technical/commercial

    teams navigate through difficult to understand regulations that impact ability to sell products in certain markets.

    • Explore & highlight new strategies for achieving and sustaining world class EHS performance at the site.
    • Drive & coordinate implementation of site level behavior-based safety programs to ensure correct behaviors are recognized and reinforced.
    • Coordinates hazardous waste disposal shipments.
    • Carries out impact assessments to identify, assess and reduce company EHS and Security risks and financial costs.
    • Support new Products/Processes implementation by providing EHS and Security requirements during projects' concept planning phase.
    • Negotiate EHS & Security service agreements and manages associated costs and revenues.
    • Develops and Manages EHS and Security budget accounts.
    • Prepares all the safety, and environmental reports required by law and coordinates issuance of licenses necessary by regulatory agencies.
    • Leads site's/company social responsibility issues and actions.
    • Evaluates and approves all plant Change Control proposals.
    • Evaluates, implements necessary programs and controls ergonomic hazards.
    • Supports and implements cost reduction projects, as part of plant goals.
    • Develops and monitors emergency action plans, policies and procedures to prevent accidents and illness, including the preparation of facilities prior to Snowstorms, Tornados or other environmental emergencies.
    • Conducts and coordinates drills in the plant with governmental agencies like Police, Fire, Health Departments and Civil Defense.
    • Conducts industrial hygiene and/or personal surveys such as temperatures, noise, dusts, fumes, vapors, mists, gases, and solvents, implementing recommendations and control measures.
    • Maintains a file of inspections or conditions of the facility and reports in an organized manner and keeps them updated at all times.
    • Maintains himself/herself updated on emerging trends and regulatory requirements through continued education or other media.
    • Provides technical recommendations to improve health and safety measures to Manufacturing Areas to minimize accidents or incidences.
    • Performs other duties and responsibilities, as required.
