Summary

Library Van Driver, FT

The Library Van Driver picks up and delivers library materials to each of the 18 county library facilities in a correct and timely manner. There is a regular delivery schedule, and each library is visited Monday through Friday. Light maintenance tasks are performed at Chester County Library & District Center and the Henrietta Hankin Branch. A valid Pennsylvania Driver's License and a clear driving record are required.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to pack library materials to be delivered each day and load the van; deliver, pick-up, and sort library materials for delivery to the member libraries on the assigned route; unload materials at Chester County Library and deliver materials to internal library departments; and to perform janitorial or light maintenance duties at Chester County Library and Henrietta Hankin Branch.

All library positions require the following criminal background and child abuse clearances: Report of criminal history from the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP); Child Abuse History Clearance from the Department of Human Services (Child Abuse); and Fingerprint based federal criminal history submitted through the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent (FBI).

Hours: 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday

Essential Duties

Deliver, pick-up and sort materials for upcoming deliveries, as scheduled.
Pack items to be delivered each morning, load the van, and check with the office for any special items that are to be delivered.
Make stops as scheduled at County Buildings (Courthouse, Government Services Center and 313 West Market St), member libraries, and other locations for pick-up and delivery.
Unload materials and deliver to internal Exton library departments.
Organize / pack materials for next day's deliveries.
Daily pick-up and drop-off of mail to Post Office.
Fuel van fleet as needed.
Drop off vans for repair and maintenance as needed.
Clean van room.
Perform building maintenance as needed: install, move, perform minor repairs, or dispose of furniture and equipment; remove recycling, change light bulbs; pick up or unload and store deliveries of supplies (e.g., paper towels, cleaning supplies, etc.); route UPS deliveries within the building; salt, shovel or snowblow entrances and walkways.
Perform custodian duties as needed: clean restrooms, vacuum, clean interiors of windows; dust and wipe counters and furniture; remove trash; break-down boxes; sweep exterior entrance areas, etc.
Empty book drops and recycle unwanted books from Friends of the library.
Set-up and take down chairs and tables in the large meeting room (seats 120) according to plans filed by scheduled users.
Perform other duties, tasks, maintenance and special projects, as required.

Qualifications/Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
Six months to one year of job-related experience and/or training.
Organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and proceed with objectives.
Accurate and detail-oriented.
Communication skills.
Interpersonal skills.
Must have a clear driving record.
A valid driver's license is required.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; bend at the waist or work bent at the waist; kneel, stoop, crouch or squat; climb stairs; twist or rotate at the waist; push items weighing 50 to 75 pounds; lift items weighing 50 to 75 pounds up to three feet high; carry items weighing 50 to 75 pounds for a distance of 50 to 100 yards; drive a vehicle; and talk or hear. Occasionally, the employee will need to reach above shoulder height. On rare occasions, the employee will need to work with arms above shoulders; crawl; climb or work while on a ladder; operate machinery; and deal with an uncommon level of noise.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
Will work outside or drive a car 85% of the time.
Will work inside 15% of the time.
Inclement weather conditions may affect ability to make deliveries on time.
Snow, ice, heavy rain, roadwork or new traffic patterns will slow drivers down.

Ability to work extended hours, as necessary.
