Objective:


Lantern Community Services is seeking a full-time Van Driver with a professional demeanor who will be responsible for the safe driving and escorting of shelter clients to and from appointments in a wheelchair accessible commercial van, as well as providing transportation services for any shelter needs.

The Driver should have a valid driver's license free of accidents, points and/or moving violations.

The driver will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the vehicle and for ensuring that it is maintained and in good working condition.

The Van Driver will be responsible for following the transportation calendar and coordinating transportation for Lantern shelter needs with the Director of Program Operations and the Vice President of Shelter Operations.

Transportation may include housing, benefits related and medical appointments and/or any other transportation needs to support shelter operations.

Additionally, the driver will work with other operations staff to ensure safe transport of clients and their belongings if and when transferred to other locations.


Essential Functions:


  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions._
  • Drives and escorts shelter clients to and from appointments for housing, benefits or housing.
  • Ensures welcoming and respectful atmosphere on the van.
  • Assist riders as needed when entering or exiting the vehicle.
  • Interacts professionally, courteously, and respectfully with clients and staff both inside and outside van.
  • Delivers belongings and supplies to other sites as needed.
  • Operates vehicle in a safe, timely and efficient manner.
  • Reports problems related to routing, scheduling, tickets, accidents or vehicle breakdowns and malfunctions promptly.
  • Follows the transportation calendar and keeps DPO (Director of Program Operations) informed of any scheduling conflicts or issues.
  • Ensure that all passengers have on seat belts on at all times while the vehicle is in motion.
  • Performs daily routine safety checks, pretrip and posttrip inspections on assigned vehicle.
  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicle both inside and out by routine wiping down and mopping as well as bringing van to car wash on a routine basis.
  • Completes daily vehicle inspection logs, pretrip log, and post trip log.
  • Ensures that the vehicle is in good working condition by making sure that routine maintenance is performed.
  • Purchases gas, completes, and submits the monthly gas log.
  • Maintains knowledge of local area street and highway systems, motor vehicle laws and regulations, safe/defensive driving techniques and the needs of population served.
  • Reports all traffic incidents and accidents (including personal vehicle) immediately to Director of Operations and Vice President of Operations.
  • Reports concerns about client stability to the Director of Social Service or their designee in a timely fashion.
  • Assists within the shelter when vehicle is not in use, including but not limited to access control, perimeter checks, verticals, and other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:


  • Valid New York State driver's licensewith a clean driving record without accidents or moving violations
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Oneyear experience of institutional driving
  • Comfortable engaging with chronically homeless and/or clients with special needs that may include mental health, substance use or medical conditions.
  • Must have experience with driving commercial vans or larger vehicles.
  • Experience working in a homeless shelter preferred.
  • Conversationallevel Spanish preferred.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a homeless shelter and works with a population who may experience mental illness, substance use, disability, HIV/AIDS, and other chronic illnesses.


Physical Demands:


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, climb stairs and/ or kneel.

They must also use their hands to type, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40lbs.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
