About You and This Role:


The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a R&D/TS&D Technician in the Polymer Synthesis group in the Formulation, Automation and Materials Science (FAMS) capability of Core R&D located in Collegeville, PA.

FAMS is strategically aligned to Dow businesses, accelerating innovation and enabling custom solutions to meet the needs of Dow's customers through the use of world class instrumentation and synthesis techniques.

In this role, you will work as part of a team supporting lead scientists and R&D technologists in developing, screening and commercializing new products and processes.

Your Day-to-day work will involve planning experiments, running polymerizations reactions (including emulsion polymerization and solution polymerizations), and characterizing polymer properties.

Results will be organized and maintained in an electronic laboratory notebook and communicated effectively with coworkers and supervisors.

You will need efficient computer skills are needed to prepare experiments, analyze, report results from a broad range of synthesis and characterization tools (including some automated tools).

Your ability to work safely and independently is a must.


Responsibilities:


  • Safely conduct laboratory polymer synthesis. (Training on lab equipment and analytical instrumentation will be provided in this role). This includes taking ownership of synthesis equipment to ensure reliable daytoday operation.
  • Perform typical characterization methods used for polymers (particle size measurement, molecular weight, residual monomers, solid content etc.).
  • Develops experimental plans for review/approval by Lead Scientist or Technology Leader and executes approved plans by performing routine and nonstandard tasks or procedures of higher complexity.
  • Manages and safely executes laboratory work requests, laboratory equipment maintenance, running laboratory apparatus/testing equipment and documenting data.
  • Updates personal knowledge for proper use of equipment via manuals and job aids, logs maintenance activities and calibration results as required.
  • Communicates scientific observations to project team/principal investigator and organizes/prepares data for inclusion in supported studies.
  • Participate in all safety programs mandated by the site and the department; frequently evaluate operating procedures for safety and data quality purposes.
  • Maintain inventories of consumable materials, chemicals, and supplies.
  • Promptly and effectively communicates issues to Technology Leader or lead scientists in order to enable or accelerate problem resolution.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of an Associates degree in a science related discipline/Military Degree Equivalency (MDE) and 1 year of relevant work experience or high school diploma/GED and 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to willing and able to work in a laboratory environment wearing safety equipment such as safety glasses, goggles, respirators, earplugs, and/or steeltoed shoes as appropriate.
  • Must be able to willing and able to work in such environments with frequent bending, reaching, and lifting (20 lbs.).
  • Must be willing and able to stand or walk for extended periods of time.

Preferred Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or other science related is preferred.
  • Organic chemistry coursework
  • 13 years of laboratory experience in synthesis.
  • Organic synthesis experience.
