The Speech Language Pathologist has the responsibility of overseeing and coordinating the effectiveness and efficiency of interdisciplinary team care for patients and families. This position requires working closely with families and multiple healthcare providers to develop, implement and measure the outcomes of care plans over the life span of individuals affected by cleft and craniofacial anomalies. This job includes a complex clinical practice as a speech-language pathologist, as well as overseeing and managing the operational and clinical functions of the Cleft-Craniofacial Speech-Language Pathology and referral to other rehabilitative services.

This job includes a wide range of leadership and academic skills from teaching and supervising graduate students to managing patient finances and training the nurse coordinator.

This position will be 32 hours per week.

    Responsibilities Include:

    • Facilitate team function and assist families with the provision of coordinated cleft-craniofacial care in order to maximize outcomes and satisfaction.
    • Ensure the Program provides care that is comprehensive and integrated in order to maximize habilitation or rehabilitation. Examples include deciding which providers a patient sees at a visit, facilitating communication between families and providers efficiently, developing a form to facilitate communication between providers and schedulers, etc.
    • Develop treatment plans and discuss with patients/families and care providers.
    • Write a comprehensive interdisciplinary note communicating history, findings and care plan. Perform this independently as needed and also assist with the Director with this.
    • Oversee and assist the Nurse Coordinator to ensure treatment plans are understood, coordinated and implemented. Provide ongoing problem solving and develop clinical procedures and tools to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of care coordination.
    • Oversee and assist the Nurse Coordinator to identify resources for patients/families and refer as needed to ensure care plan is implemented (e.g., insurance applications, special education testing, free bottles, specialty providers).
    • Facilitate communication between providers to maximize effectiveness and efficiency. Includes development of clinical tools, building positive relationships, and setline disagreements.
    • Manage new patient referrals, including procedures for scheduling and education for staff.
    • Oversee marketing acquisition for new patients, including website content, in-services, webinars, and brochures.
    • Assist the Director with the management of the program finances, including setting clinical fees, review of accounts, and purchases.
    • Oversee and coordinate the clinical function and operations and of the 22q Team, a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers for individuals and families with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (Velocardiofacial / DiGeorge Syndrome).

Speech-Language Pathologist Clinical Practice: Conduct complex speech-language evaluations and treatment for patients across the life span (premature to geriatric) with cleft-craniofacial anomalies and other orofacial conditions. Specialize in velopharyngeal dysfunction, profound motor speech deficits, and differentiation of structural versus learned disorders across many languages.

    • High percentage of clinical practice consists of diagnostic evaluations for patients presenting with velopharyngeal dysfunction, speech sound production disorders and feeding problems. Speech-language evaluations conducted as independent consultations and as a part of interdisciplinary teams, including Cleft Team, Craniofacial Team, Velopharyngeal Inadequacy Team, and 22q Team. Evaluations include patient/parents interviewing, standardized and non-standardized testing, imaging, acoustic analyses, interpretation, referrals, and extensive follow-up. Advanced knowledge of cleft-craniofacial conditions and treatment is critical for decision-making.
    • In-depth planning and follow-up is required for patients, including communicating the speech-language treatment plan to the school and outpatient speech-language pathologists. Extensive education and training is often needed.
    • Perform follow-up testing, such as comprehensive language testing or velopharyngeal imaging. Nasendoscopic imaging is conducted on a regular basis. There are very few SLP's in the state that are trained in this.
    • Coordinate with other providers in order to optimize speech-language and feeding skills or clarify diagnosis, such as planning velopharyngeal surgery, obtaining hearing aids, planning timing of orthodontic treatment, brain imaging, etc.
    • Identify and coordinate referral of patients who need additional neurocognitive, developmental-behavioral, or genetic testing through medical or educational specialists.
    • Provide speech-language and feeding treatment for patients with severe disorders. Supervise clinical fellow as well.

    About the Department

The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is the state's only dental school and the only dental school in the northern tier of states between Wisconsin and the Pacific Northwest. We are a regional resource to five states for dental education, consulting services, patient treatment, and ongoing continuing dental education.

We educate dentists, dental specialists, dental therapists, dental hygienists, dental educators and research-scientists. We offer advanced degree programs in seven ADA-recognized specialties: endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics and TMD and orofacial pain. We educate scholars in oral biology, dental hygiene and oral health for older adults. Dentists from other countries who wish to practice in the United States matriculate through our Program for Advanced Standing Students. Learners have the option to pursue a Masters in Public Health or a PhD alongside their DDS degree.

We are the only dental hygiene program in the state associated with a dental school. Offering programs at the baccalaureate and master of science level, our integrated program prepares oral health professionals to collaborate from their first day in the profession.

We became the first dental school in the nation to educate dental therapists in 2009. Dental therapists perform basic preventative services, drill and restore teeth for children and adults and remove primary teeth under the supervision of a licensed dentist. As of 2023, we have graduated 91 dental therapists from the program.

Our work affects virtually every person in Minnesota. We educate approximately 73% of the state's practicing dentists, 68% of licensed dental therapists, and 49% of dental hygiene educators. Our researchers develop and test restorative materials used by dentists around the world. We provide critical oral health care with more than 100,000 patient visits in our campus clinics and more than 16,000 patient visits at outreach sites in underserved communities throughout the state. We provide continuing dental education for 7,1000 practicing dental professionals each year.

The School of Dentistry is dedicated to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. Diverse teams, perspectives, and backgrounds create a strong and creative team that best serves the University's many communities, on campus and beyond. The University is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Black, Indigenous, people of color, LGBTQIA+, women, veterans, and members of historically underrepresented communities are highly encouraged to apply.
