    The University of Virginia Health Development Office seeks an Associate Director and/or Senior Associate Director, Health Development Partnerships to join our collaborative, high-achieving, and enthusiastic team in support of the continued success of the University's Honor the Future campaign.


    Responsibilities include building key internal relationships on behalf of UVA Health Development and the larger University community, with an emphasis on priority development and patient prospect identification toward building a major gift pipeline for the program.

    Additional responsibilities include working with UVA Health partners to gather content, developing funding priorities, arranging site visits, providing stewardship for gifts received, managing faculty training, staffing key faculty, providing initial outreach to prospective patient donors, and related work that advances the strategic priorities of UVA Health.

    The incumbents will primarily work with physician leaders, faculty, administrators, and development colleagues to advance the philanthropic priorities of UVA Health.

    The incumbents are responsible for working with physicians to identify prospective patient donors and to create appropriate fundraising strategies that comply with the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

    Responsibilities include serving as a lead contact for Department Chairs, Division Chiefs, UVA Health faculty and care providers, and other staff for specific programs and working collaboratively with other colleagues to staff the broad range of UVA Health priorities.

    The incumbents will report to the Executive Director, Healthcare Philanthropy.

    The Associate Director, Health Partnerships will:

    • Work to cultivate strong partnerships with faculty and physician leaders to identify grateful patients and families.
    • Work closely with development officers to prepare them with needed information to share with potential donors.
    • Establish a consistent presence within assigned departments, centers and programs, to build faculty and staff partnerships and promote a culture of philanthropy.
    • Coach faculty and staff so that they are well prepared to partner in development activities and advance prospect/donor relationships.
    • Provide new hire intake for new research faculty.
    • Curate site visits with key faculty to engage interested patients in funding priorities.
    • Educate faculty on best practice for patient philanthropy, and utilize those practices to identify and appropriately follow up on patient referrals.
    • Evaluate HIPAA-compliant patient data for physicians in assigned programs and identify potential grateful patient prospects for further research and cultivation.
    • Ensure that program data is processed within the data portal.
    • Provide regular and timely documentation of work with partners and donors in appropriate databases.
    • Maintain a strategic and collaborative relationship with development officers, UVA Health Development leadership, donor relations and stewardship, communications, and appropriate University Advancement staff (e

    gift planning, annual giving, gift accounting) to develop and implement fundraising strategies in order to meet established goals and objectives.

    • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of institutional priorities including research, care, and education in order to translate these topics of focus into compelling funding opportunities.
    • Disseminate information to advancement team.
    • Facilitate productive relationships between faculty and donors through relationships with development officers.
    • In collaboration with UVA Health Development Communications team, translate research and center campaign priorities and needs into compelling written and electronic content, including proposals, case materials, and presentations.
    • Guide faculty through philanthropic process by developing strategy for identified patients and writing sample communications.
    • Work to ensure timely, accurate completion of key visits, communication and internal team requests for support.
    • Represent the University at events in order to support the University, build deeper relationships with leaders and faculty and cultivate donors.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    The Senior Associate Director, Health Partnerships will (in addition to the responsibilities listed above):


    • Oversee the workflow to both Health Partnership roles, ensuring the highest priorities are met.
    • Provide regular reporting on the outcomes of the program to Health Development leadership.
    • Facilitate development's contributions to Department Annual Review goal setting and reporting process in collaboration with UVA Health Development leaders.
    • Partner with the largest clinical departments (Medicine and Surgery) and their respective leaders in developing and delivering on individualized strategies for the successful engagement of faculty and patients across all sub-specialties.
    • Serve as lead for faculty training programming, in coordination with Health Development team.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree and at least four years of experience in health care, working with faculty, or fundraising is required
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop relationships of trust and respect with a diverse range of constituents, including healthcare providers, health leaders, research faculty, administrators, donors and prospects, and development colleagues
    • High emotional intelligence, empathy and ability to relate to providers who are providing care
    • Highest ethical standards and attention to confidentiality when dealing with donor and patient information
    • Ability to actively listen, analyze information/situations and solve problems
    • Ability to take a proactive approach; organize and manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, and adapt to changing priorities
    • Thoughtful approach and sound judgment
    • Demonstrated ability to employ entrepreneurial approaches to meet deadlines and consistently achieve/exceed goals
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Robust understanding of principles of health care, philanthropy, higher education, healthcare philanthropy and relationship management
    • Knowledge of current best practices in grateful patient fundraising
    • Previous work in or familiarity with an academic medical center or healthcare environment
    • Experience in a collaborative environment/matrixed organizations also preferred


    This job will be filled at either the Associate or Senior Associate level, depending on the successful candidate's experience, knowledge, and competencies.

    The ideal candidate at the Associate level will have at least four years of previous health or faculty-related or fundraising experience, a proven track record of managing collaborative relationships, the ability to use a database to maintain and review records and reports.

    The ideal candidate at the Senior Associate level will have at least seven years of previous health or faculty-related or fundraising experience, a consistent, demonstrated track record of managing high-level relationships towards organizational goals, the ability to use a database to maintain and review records and reports, and proven experience in managing and developing strategies for specific programs.

    Salary range(s):
    Associate Director, Health Development Partnerships - $75K-$85K

    Senior Associate Director, Health Development Partnerships - $85K-$95K
