GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, provides care and the basic needs of dogs that are being boarded. This includes cleaning of cages, runs, and common areas; laundry; walking; proper feeding; and care of all boarded animals.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Flexibility in schedule and availability to work weekends and holidays.
  • Previous experience in a kennel, rescue, or animal hospital is not required but preferred.
  • Must be 18 years or older to apply

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure that cages and animals are properly identified and that personal property (toys, treats, blankets, leashes) are stored in the proper area.
  • Clean, disinfect and maintain kennels, cages, runs and stalls as often as is necessary to ensure no cages or kennels are soiled and odors are not apparent. Perform general cleaning in other areas of the kennel to control the spread of disease. Wash and sterilize water and food bowls.
  • Launder and dry towels and blankets.
  • Walk boarded dogs to provide exercise.
  • Provide Tender Loving Care to animals.
  • Patrol kennel grounds daily, picking up and trash and stool material. Empty trash.
  • Record information such as feeding schedules, appearance, behavior of animals that are boarded or trained.
  • Observe animal appearance and behavior for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontentment and a healthy mental state.
  • Report signs of illness, disease, injury or unusual activity.
  • Take in dogs for boarding, as scheduled.
  • Release dogs back to owners from boarding, as scheduled.
  • Collect and record payments as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:
The Kennel Technician works under the supervision of the owner, who will indicate general assignments, limitations and priorities. Repeat/scheduled assignments are performed independently.


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Observe and react accordingly to individual canine temperaments.
  • Ability to use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency.
  • Ability to perform moderate physical labor.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments. Understand and carry out oral and written direction.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with aggressive dogs; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, so employee will need to be able to dress for the weather conditions accordingly.

Follow federal and state animal health laws and regulations.

  • Frequently required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, and sit.
  • Frequently use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; will reach with hands and arms.
  • Use strength or agility to handle and maintain dogs in a safe environment.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasionally handle dogs weighing up to and over 150 pounds.
