Statement of the Job:

The Darling Marine Center seeks a licensed captain to manage vessel operations at the Center through December 2024.

During 2024, the vessel operations program will be undergoing a review, and we expect an on-going position to become available starting January 2025.


This current search will identify someone responsible for overseeing the operation of all Darling Marine Center vessels through this year.

This includes supervising small boat activity and compliance, piloting the RV Ira C.

(42' research vessel), maintaining the fleet and facilities to comply with University, State, and Federal requirements, and providing training associated with vessel operations.

Boat activity will be scaled to be commensurate with the time available for this position.


Typical annual salary for this part-time, 20-hours per week, fixed-length position through December 31, 2024 is $32,000 to $34,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:


Required:


  • Typically has the education associated with an associate degree and at least five years of relevant professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard license for motor vehicles 25 Gross Tons or over
  • Training in boat safety
  • Experience operating in coastal waters
  • Ability to perform small boat and engine maintenance
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to manage budgets

Preferred:


  • Bachelor's degree in a marine field
  • Diving experience
  • Experience operating a research vessel and deploying gear
