Position Summary:

The Division of Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success is seeking an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Recruitment, this position is responsible for leading a team of Admissions Counselors to drive the development and implementation of effective recruitment strategies to recruit undergraduate students to Virginia Commonwealth University.

Core Responsibilities:


Supervision of Recruitment Team (45%):

  • Lead a team of 6 full-time professionals to accomplish the goals of the department for student recruitment ensuring staff have access to appropriate recruitment and admissions training and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist with the development of the presentation schedule for admissions events and information sessions.
  • Conduct research to determine, create, and implement effective student recruitment strategies including use of multimedia tools such as publications, webbased information, and marketing to drive student enrollment and increase yield.

- and off-campus recruitment and yield events.


Undergraduate Admissions (40%):

  • Counsel applicants, prospective students, and parents concerning admissions requirements, procedures, and programs offered by the university and conduct group information sessions.
  • Accurately review and evaluate applicant credentials in a timely manner to determine their admissibility to the university based on criteria for admission.
  • Utilizing the CRM and other student information systems.
  • Maintain firstclass public relations and provide quality customer service inperson, via electronic media, and over the telephone to all university constituencies.
  • Build and nurture mutually beneficial partnerships with key stakeholders across the University and other community partners.
  • Travel to admissions events and other selected activities to actively recruit new students from both instate and outofstate.
  • Serve as a contact for the Office of Admissions in developing relationships with vendors and assists with the process of ordering recruitment merchandise.
  • Manage a recruitment territory
- including travel, college fairs, receptions, panel presentations, information sessions, high school visits, and electronic outreach.

  • Assist with the development, implementation, and management of a robust inperson and Virtual Visitation & Recruitment Program including, but not limited to, information sessions, student panels, academic and student services programming, and admissions phone call campaigns.
  • Develop, update, and provide postevent data analysis reports to leadership on all admissions events.
  • Perform information sessions inperson and virtually.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Marketing and Recruitment Plans (15%):

  • Manage marketing and recruitment plans and activities utilizing multimedia strategies, direct mail, currently enrolled students, faculty and alumni, and other methods and media to attract new students; both freshmen and transfer students.
  • Assist in developing and implementing strategies and programming, particularly for bringing more students to visit campus throughout the year, and for increasing yield in general.
  • Participate in the creation and editing of phone campaigns and other electronic marketing communications as needed.

Minimum Hiring Standards:


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training/experience and significant experience in a higher education setting.
  • Valid driver's license and current car insurance.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills and public relations skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and balance a variety of tasks.
  • Ability to use office automation, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to provide clear direction and establish efficient priorities.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Master's degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Experience in collegelevel recruitment and/or admissions.
  • Prior recruitment experience at a fouryear institution
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience with Student Information Systems including Banner and Slate.
  • Experience in planning and organizing events.
  • Experience in planning travel for business purposes.
