    Overview

    The VAMC in Memphis, Tennessee is recruiting for a Physician Assistant for the Intensive Care Until to serve as a full-time Pulmonary Critical Care service physician assistant. The position is accountable to the Chief of Pulmonary Critical Care, for assuring the most effective delivery of state-of-the-art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards.

    Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Providing acute care in collaboration with the Pulmonary / Critical Care Medicine Physicians.
  • Manages patients according to established standards and frequently gives directions to patient care support staff (nursing, respiratory etc).
  • Responsible for assisting in identifying and managing patients requiring critical care throughout the hospital and coordinating care delivery based on standards.
  • The PA functions in accordance with State and Federal regulations for equivalent and provides care according to standards of care which include assessment of health status, diagnosis, development of plan of care and treatment, implementation of treatment plan, and evaluation of patient status.
  • Generating diagnoses, treatment plans, prescribing medications, consulting, collaborating and performing procedures in accordance with standards of care.
  • Provide care to patients in non-acute care locations who develop or are at high risk of developing sepsis as well as those with high risk for early clinical deterioration due to any etiology.
  • Serves as stabilizing reference/facilitator for the rotating medical team(emphasis on facilitating monthly orientation and standardization).
  • Plays a lead role in trainee education, including orientation to the Critical Care unit, and system based practices, unique to the VA Medical Center.
  • Performs health assessments utilizing physical and diagnostic tools(special emphasis on bedside ultrasound).
  • Establishes diagnoses and treatment plans that include health education ,prescribed pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment following standard of care (special emphasis on mobility and prevention).
  • Consults and collaborates with specialty and primary care services as needed.
  • Facilitates staff, patient and family education and provides educational resources related to all aspects of acute care including end of life (special emphasis on end-of-life care).
  • Contributes to data collection and uses ICU data to monitor outcomes and quality of care.
  • Performs life saving procedures including but not limiting to intubation, Central Venous Line, Arterial line, thoracentesis, Chest tube placement.
  • Assists the ICU team in procedures, including obtaining consents, and set up of procedures including necessary medications.
  • Receives, triage as needed and complete critical care consults including linking consults to completed notes.
  • Actively engages in preventive care for our patients, including enforcing the prevention care bundles.
  • Serve as leader for rapid response and sepsis teams data.
  • Performs efficient screening and assessments to identify patients with sepsis criteria or those at high risk to develop sepsis or early clinical deterioration.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests as needed.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities as described in sepsis standard of care and care bundles(special emphasis on dynamic fluid volume assessments).
  • Monitors the effectiveness of sepsis interventions and location of care delivery based on patient severity. Assists in determining appropriate level of care including transferring to higher level of care.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to provide high quality sepsis care: including ED. general ward, spinal cord and other areas within the hospital.
  • Job Requirements

    Physician Assistant Basic Requirements :

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. [Graduate of a training program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of PA (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following:
  • (1) Master's degree in any discipline;
    OR
    (2) Bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a PA.]

  • Certification. [Must have successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE). NOTE: Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is no longer required for employment in VHA.
  • Licensure. PAs must possess an active, current, full, and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. PAs must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active and current licensure in that State.
  • Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019, Employee Occupational Health Service.
  • English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
