    Position description

The Schools of Medicine and Biological Sciences at UC San Diego are committed to academic excellence, and to enhancing access, inclusion, and success of our diverse faculty, staff, and students are recruiting the Brody Endowed Chair in Circadian Biology and Medicine.

UC San Diego School of Medicine ( ), established in 1968, is the region's only medical school. As a key component of the University's top-tier academic medical center, our role is to improve health through innovative research, education, and patient care. The School of Medicine is home to more than 500 medical students, 900 residents and fellows, and 1,700 physician and scientist faculty members. It is among the top medical schools in the country and among the top biomedical research institutions in the world.

The School of Biological Sciences ( ) at UC San Diego is a vibrant center of scientific discovery, innovation, and collaboration. Our large research base spans many areas of biology and has one of the most celebrated graduate programs in the country.

The mission of the Center for Circadian Biology is to foster innovative research and educational programs that reveal the mechanisms, general principles, and applications of biological rhythms in diverse organisms. The center provides support for investigators to incorporate the study of daily rhythmicity into their biological studies - particularly as it relates to behavior, physiology, and medicine - and serves as a catalyst for scientists working in basic and clinical aspects of circadian biology to forge new research partnerships. Center members mentor undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students in cross-disciplinary approaches through circadian biology research, and the Center produces and disseminates materials for education and scientific advocacy on circadian biology.

The newly established Stuart and Barbara L. Brody Endowed Chair in Circadian Biology and Medicine was created to expand UC San Diego's ability to fill a critical gap at the intersection of research, circadian biology, and patient care. The chair is housed in the School of Biological Sciences and facilitated in close partnership with the School of Medicine. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate an interest in serving in a leadership role in the Center for Circadian Biology ( ) and, depending on qualifications and experience, may also be considered as its director. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate commitment in supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion in health informatics.

References (letter of recommendation) will be requested from all finalists.

The academic appointment is expected to be as Associate or Full Professor level in the School of Biological Sciences and/or School of Medicine. Series will include Ladder Rank, with a potential In-Residence or Clinical X appointment for School of Medicine candidates. A link to the full descriptions of each series is listed below:

    Ladder Rank Professor - see:
    In-Residence Professor - see:
    Clinical X Professor - see:

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. The selected candidate will receive a competitive startup package to support salary and research programs. The incumbent will be proposed for the Stuart and Barbara L. Brody Endowed Chair and administer its associated research fund.

As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited. Additional information can be found here:

    Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Candidates must have a health sciences doctoral degree (MD, MD/PhD, PhD, DO, PharmD, DrPH, etc.), advanced clinical or postdoctoral training, and demonstrated experience in one or more areas of circadian biology research, which may include aspects of sleep. As the academic part of this position is at the Associate or Full Professor position, candidates are expected to have a track record as PI and/or substantial collaborations as Co-I with other PIs to secure extramural funding (e.g., NIH, NSF). Candidates must also have experience in pre-clinical or clinical time-series data management and/or evaluation, and in the assembly and oversight of interdisciplinary teams, ideally with clinical oversight. The successful candidate should have demonstrated experience in serving as a faculty advisor or educator for medical students, residents, fellows, graduate, and/or post-graduate trainees.

    Preferred qualifications
Experience with translational application of circadian data within a clinical setting is preferred.
