    Description

    Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator

    Company: Virginia Tech

    Job Description:

    • Perform various skilled tasks in the maintenance of roadsides, highways, pathways, and landfill operations.
    • Operate different equipment and trucks, use hand, and power tools.
    • Tasks include cutting/removing brush, cleaning ditches, addressing erosion issues, and patching potholes.
    • Provide traffic control, install traffic signs, warning devices, and flag traffic.
    • Install directional, building identification, and parking lot signs.
    • Support the installation of exterior elements across the campus.
    • Assist in special/athletic events.
    • Perform preventative maintenance and minor mechanical repairs.
    • Clear snow and ice from roadways and handle emergency/inclement weather operations.
    • Designated as Emergency Personnel.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Previous experience operating trucks and related highway & earth moving equipment.
    • Must have a valid driver's license with a good record.
    • Hold a Commercial Driver's license (CDL) Class B or higher.
    • Possess and maintain a DOT medical certification.
    • Knowledge of mechanical aspects of equipment and safety standards.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team, perform heavy manual labor, follow instructions, and work in various conditions.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Class A CDL.
    • Tanker Certification.
    • Knowledge of right of way maintenance and repair techniques.
    • Experience in a commercial or institutional environment.

    Appointment Type: Regular

    Salary Information: Commensurate with experience
