GENERAL DUTIES:

Monitor and evaluate nursing care delivery in accordance with PCM policies and procedures. Ensure that nursing practice complies with established nursing standards.

Function as Charge Nurse in the absence of Health Services Administrator/Designee.

Assess and provide comprehensive nursing care while observing and maintaining security requirements.

Performs duties under supervision of a Medical Director or other mid-level practitioner (i.e. PA-C or CRNP) pursuant to protocols established by the Medical Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred, previous education and experience may be substituted. Graduate of an accredited nursing school.

Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the state in which the facility is located.

Experience in health care delivery system helpful.

Clinical decision-making ability required.

Ability to communicate effectively required.

Ability to function independently required.

Demonstrates clinical competency.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Report to and meet with HSA on a regular basis.

Maintain a professional nursing attitude at all times.

Maintain a professional working relationship with facility staff, unit staff, contracted providers, outside service providers and Corporate staff.

Is tactful and diplomatic at all times.

Make use of established Corporate and facility policies and procedures in clinical practice.

Must use factual data and sound independent judgment in meeting the responsibilities and performing the duties of a staff nurse.

Ensure compliance with established standards of PCM.

Ensure that the proper flow of relevant information (inmate/patient information, unit problems) is disseminated to appropriate personnel.

Maintain security and confidentiality of all medical records.

Participate in Quality Assurance Committee as assigned.

Monitor nursing services to avoid the inappropriate use and/or duplication of services. Advises HSA and Nurse Supervisor if these situations arise.

Monitor and recommend methods to improve operational efficiency and cost containment effectiveness.

Ensure strict compliance to all applicable pharmacy regulations.

Monitor stock inventories of supplies and equipment and alert head nurse of needs.

Monitor physical safety requirements for inmate/patients and staff to ensure a safe working environment. Notifies HSA of safety hazards.

Assist HSA/designee or Nurse Supervisor in coordinating and/or providing in-service programs which are aligned with the medical program.

Attend scheduled meetings as required.

Assist HSA or Nurse Supervisor to coordinate and/or conduct monthly health care staff meetings, as assigned.

Maintain unit nursing operations at ALL times to meet accreditation standards.

Attend seminars, workshops and conferences at the direction of PCM.

Flexibility in work schedule is required. Unpredictable circumstances may warrant additional work hours and overnight travel to other facilities.

May be required to relocate (temporarily) to meet the needs of PCM.

Adhere to established PCM and facility policies and procedures.


In the absence of the HSA/ designee, is operationally responsible and accountable for the nursing functions of the medical unit.


Provide other services and performs other duties as assigned by Nurse Supervisor, Health Services Administrator, head nurse, or Corporate staff.

Maintain accurate records of all controlled substances, narcotics, and sharps in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.

Provide health counseling to inmates/patients.


Conduct sick call for inmate/patients and provide provisional diagnosis and treatment for selected minor illnesses and injuries defined by written protocol and approved by PCM Medical Director.

Refer all cases not covered by written protocol or that do not respond to treatment to an appropriate PCM Physician.


Receive and give inter-shift report to ensure continuity of care and to disseminate pertinent information necessary to the functioning of the oncoming shift.


Observe, report, and document symptoms, reactions and progress of inmate/patients and participates in the formulation of the plan of nursing care.

Collect complete ongoing data to determine nursing care needs.

Implement nursing care plans which promote, maintain and restore the well-being of inmate/patients.


Perform all aspects of general and specialized nursing care principles and techniques in the care and treatment of the ill inmate/patient.


Administer:

immunizations, tuberculin testing; basic and advanced first aid; basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation; visual acuity and telebinocular examinations, and oxygen, when indicated.
