BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:

This is professional services work planning, directing, and overseeing DEP programs at the regional level to ensure that statewide goals are met consistent with regional needs and the agency's mission and priorities.

The director ensures that the regional office is structured and managed in a manner that maximizes DEP's ability to meet its goals and ensures that policies are implemented at the point of service delivery.

The director also advocates within the ranks of DEP's senior managers for policy modifications that appear appropriate given conditions they observe in their region.

The tasks associated with this position primarily include, but are not limited to:


  • Ensuring that State law, agency and procedures, and administration initiatives are implemented in the region consistent with senior management directions.
  • Providing a senior management level point of contact to businesses, legislators, municipal officials, organizations, and individuals in order to develop and maintain relationships that result in exceptional customer service for the region.
  • Directly and indirectly supervising employees.
  • Representing DEP on the Commissioner's behalf in a wide variety of meetings, stakeholder groups, or projects.
  • Managing complex, multimedia licensing projects in the region.
  • Serving as the Commissioner's designee on boards and committees; and
  • Managing regional office physical facilities, fleet, and other operations critical for DEP's day to day workflow.
Some, but not all, duties may be performed by Telework.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A twelve (12) year combination of education, training, and/or professional level experience in a related field(s) as well as a demonstrated history of experience and success regarding Maine's environmental protection laws, supervising employees, and being the point of contact for a diverse group of individuals outside of one's place of employment.

The core competencies associated with this position include being customer focused and results oriented, demonstrating sound judgement, and communicating effectively.

  • Experience or knowledge of Maine's environmental and administrative laws, rules, procedures, and programs.
  • Experience mediating conflicts between multiple groups, constituents, and/or staff.
  • Experience communicating consistently with staff and managers who are not physically in the same office location.
  • Experience communicating publicly with a variety of audiences including public officials, regulated entities, media, and citizens.
  • Understanding of the unique natural resources, economy, and culture of the Southern Maine region.
