Position Summary:
Strategically directs patient care services.

Provides direction and leadership in the areas of operating plan development, strategic planning, goal setting, capital plan development, and the development of people and resources.

The Vice President (VP), for nursing is responsible for the creation of operational programs that ensure quality, improve patient satisfaction, facilitate patient flow, and controls costs.

Directs nursing to support the organization's strategic goals in accordance with federal, state and local laws and industry regulations. Participates in performance improvement initiatives that enhance staff development.

Work to create an exemplary organization committed to providing exceptional healthcare services in a safe and trustful environment, through expertise, commitment, and compassion of our family of caregivers.

Ensures consistency and the development of best practices within departments and services lines. Provides consistent and comprehensive communication, flow of information and decision making within departments and the system.


The Vice President of Nursing is accountable for the department(s) of nursing and other functional areas as assigned by the President.

He/she They demonstrate expertise, management and leadership abilities, and a comprehensive understanding of the issues and industry standards affecting nursing/patient Care services.

He/she is They are responsible for ensuring the highest quality patient care and for promoting and enhancing the professional development of the department of nursing.

Key accountabilities include quality outcomes, cost management, as well as managing and working to enhance relationships which are built on a high degree of trust, effective communication, teamwork and mutual respect.


The vice president is responsible for ensuring all nursing is working within their scope of practice including Advanced Practice Nurses.

She/he is They are accountable for assuring the consistent use of the nursing process in a professional and healthy work environment.


As a member of the Nursing Executive council the VP establishes a nursing environment as outlined in the American Nurses Associations (ANA) Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice and Code of Ethics, the Maine Nurse Practice Act, Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Standards for Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environments.

In support of Nursing's Vision, Philosophy and Strategic Plan, the VP provides leadership for the development and implementation of departmental projects/initiatives, long
- and short-term goals, and is responsible for planning, administering and evaluating the operation of their assigned department(s).


Position Requirements:

  • Licensed to Practice Nursing in the State of Maine
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related discipline required
  • National Certification as a Nurse Executive required within 2 years
  • 5 years' progressive leadership experience
  • Proven leadership ability to motivate and lead staff
  • Effectively leads and manages change in a rapidly changing environment
  • Manages for results
  • Demonstrates strong customer service philosophy.
  • Demonstrates transferable leadership skills across healthcare settings
  • Exhibits exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates effective decisionmaking and delegation skills

POSITION EXPECTATIONS
Leadership

Provides executive nursing leadership and support to the departments. Identifies community needs and trends and works with leadership to develop programs and services to meet identified needs. Investigates service expansion, recommends new programs, and oversees implementation as opportunities present.

Demonstrates support of employee involvement through reward and recognition activities, both formal and informal, on a hospital wide and unit level basis.

Seeks out innovative ways to recognize and encourage staff. Promotes team building with staff and other department managers.

Works to develop the administrative skills of department managers; provides for continuous evaluation and revision of nursing practices, procedures and programs in order to keep nursing current and of high quality; coordinate performance improvement activities within nursing and participates actively on the medical center's quality improvement committee.

Creates and sustains a culture of safety.

Ensures the recruitment and retention of a progressive and well trained nursing staff in order to render timely, highly competent, and compassionate patient care; maintains regular reports of manpower utilization in a manner which supports the cost management efforts of Central Maine Healthcare (CMH) as a whole.

Leads and manages change effectively. Functions as a consultative resource
