    About Metadata Services:


    The Metadata Services Department creates, enhances, remediates, and transforms descriptive and discovery metadata in multiple schemas to provide discovery and access to library resources in SearchWorks (our Blacklight implementation) and the Stanford Digital Repository, through the integrated work of four units: Metadata Creation, Metadata Design, E-resources and Data Control.

    E-Resources is charged with the analysis, metadata remediation & loading of e-resource packages and general automated remediation & transformation projects; Data Control concentrates more on manual remediation projects.

    Unit heads report to the Head of E-Resources & Data Control.

    Some staff members also participate in the development and documentation of FOLIO workflows and linked data & other experimental metadata projects.


    About the Position:


    The Metadata Specialist forElectronic and Visual Resourceswill be responsible for complex copy, derived original, and abbreviated original cataloging foronline electronic monographs, electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), and physical video formats (e.g., DVD and Blu-ray) in a variety of Latin script (chiefly Western European) languages and original cataloging of non-documentary videos.

    The Metadata Specialist also performs authority work for the purposes of identity management.

    In general, Library Specialists at this level perform a wide range of complex and/or interrelated duties involving a high level of decision making within one or more functional areas of a library.

    The Specialist will apply their knowledge of the overall library system and work mostly independently with a high degree of initiative.

    This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.


    Core Duties*:

    • Perform complex & enhanced copy cataloging, derived original (i.e., create a record based on a related record rather than an exact match) and abbreviated-level original cataloging for monographic online resources, including ETDs and for audiovisual materials in physical formats in Latin-script languages
    • Perform original cataloging of non-documentary videos in Latin-script languages
    • Perform complex record maintenance and enhancement of metadata for library resources in electronic or visual formats as required.
    • Import selected e-resource collections using bulk import & edit processes
    • Contribute authorities and bibliographic records to national cooperative programs such as NACO and BIBCO when circumstances allow.
    • Assist in the creation, maintenance and testing of unit documentation and procedures.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor's degree plus three or more years of experience in an academic library, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

    Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Demonstrated experience with cataloging at the copy and/or derived original level according to standards such as: RDA, MARC21 bibliographic format
    • Ability to work with a variety of non-MARC metadata formats (MODS, BIBFRAME) with training
    • Ability to work with a variety of digitized physical formats (e.g., images, maps) and languages.
    • Ability to follow and apply the content rules for creating metadata records as specified for individual projects.
    Demonstrated ability to process materials in a wide variety of foreign languages and subjects.

    • Experience using or ability to learn one or more library automated systems, proficiency in using FOLIO preferred
    • Proficiency in reading at least one other Western European language besides English; ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively search OCLC or similar database utility.
    • Excellent analytic and problem solving skills.
    • Demonstrated computer proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets and communication software such as email
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain consistent accuracy and attention to detail while maintaining a very high level of productivity
    • Ability to work independently and as a team member, under pressure, in a highly demanding environment.
    • Good keyboarding skills and physical tolerance for at least six hours per day of keying
    • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, production-oriented environment and the ability to adapt quickly and work under pressure to meet deadlines and production goals.
    • Ability to take initiative, plan and prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
    • Record of excellent attendance

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to push a cart weighing up to 650 lbs. that requires an initial push force up to 70 lbs.
    • Ability to work in an environment that is dusty and or moldy
    • Ability to lift books that are up to 10 pounds
    • Ability to kneel and reach
    • Must be able to stand for many hours

    Working Conditions:

    • May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings and weekends.

    Pay Range:
    The expected pay range for this position is $35.10 to $42.79 per hour.

    Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.

    The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
