    The Opportunity

    Hudson County Community College (HCCC) seeks a Director of Nursing to join its award-winning and nationally recognized institution. This is an exciting time to be a part of the HCCC community. The College recently launched its Strategic Plan, the culmination of which will align with the College's 50 th anniversary in 2024. The College was recognized by the Association of Community College Trustees as the recipient of the 2021 ACCT Northeast Region Equity Award. HCCC has recently been named one of 101 recipients, 1 of only 7 community colleges to be distinguished for the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. HCCC's Culinary Arts Institute was ranked as the #6 Culinary Arts program in the United States by Best Choice Schools. Most recently, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) selected HCCC as one of 24 colleges nationwide to be named a "2022 Most Promising Place to Work in Community Colleges."

    College Overview

    Hudson County Community College serves one of the most ethnically diverse and densely populated communities in the United States. The College is a vibrant, urban institution of higher education whose mission is to provide its diverse communities with inclusive, high-quality educational programs and services that promote student success and upward social and economic mobility.

    More than 90% of HCCC's students receive scholarships, grants, and loans to finance their education, and the College's extensive financial aid program helps connect students with the resources they need. To date, the College's Foundation has raised over $3.5 million for student scholarships, and HCCC ranks first in the state of New Jersey for its award of Community College Opportunity Grant funds. About half of its more than 12,000 credit students identify as Hispanic, and more than 33% of all students were born outside of the U.S. In 2021, HCCC had two students selected from a national applicant pool to receive the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation's Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

    Hudson County Community College has three campuses. The largest campus is located at the heart of Jersey City's Journal Square, which is approximately 20 minutes from New York City. The College also has a North Hudson Campus, located in Union City, New Jersey and an additional location at the Hudson County Schools of Technology in Secaucus, New Jersey. The College offers 70 degree and certificate programs and more than 300-day, evening, and weekend courses throughout its three-campus network.

    HCCC offers 10 fully online degree programs and expects this number to grow in the coming year. In addition to its degree programs and courses, HCCC offers a wide array of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, non-credit classes and programs designed to develop professional skills, provide occupational training, teach languages and culinary skills, and enrich personal and cultural knowledge.

    HCCC's Nursing Program is a fully accredited, sought after institution, for students seeking a career in the field of Nursing. The Program prepares students for careers as Registered Professional Nurses. HCCC partners will many four-year institutions for those students who seek to continue their education in the field, and with hospitals, clinical sites, therapeutic centers, as well as many other medical institutions, to successfully train and place students after they have completed their studies with us.

    In addition to Nursing, the College boasts several signature programs, including a nationally recognized Culinary Arts Institute and Nursing Program. The College's Culinary Arts Institute is one of only three programs in the New York Metropolitan region to hold accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation. The Culinary Arts Institute features state-of-the-art facilities and a hands-on program that prepares students for a range of careers in the hospitality industry. The College recently announced the dedication of the Bloomberg Finance Lab, which provides students with real world experience to prepare them for employment in banks, corporations, and government agencies.

    A leader in workforce development, HCCC hosted The Aspen Institute's Workforce Leadership Academy, which was the first to be offered in partnership with a community college. The Hudson County Workforce Leadership Academy was funded through a combination of public and private donors that included JPMorgan Chase, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, The W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the County of Hudson, the LeFrak Family, and Mack-Cali.

    The Role

    Reporting to the Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences, the Director of Nursing directs the overall operations, daily activities, staff, and faculty of the Nursing program in support of the College's mission statement and in accordance with established goals and objectives, policies, and procedures of the Nursing and Health Sciences Division.

    Essential Responsibilities
    1. In consort with the Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences, develops short-term and long-term strategic planning initiatives that support the College's mission statement and offer quality educational programs and services in the Health disciplines to students.
    2. Defines, develops, implements, and monitors effective policies and procedures that support the goals and objectives of the Nursing Program. Initiates and implements ideas to enhance the program's current and changing programs offered within a diverse and multi-cultural community.
    3. Oversees and directs the ongoing activities of the Nursing Program to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness and positive outcomes of overall operations:
      • Oversees the design and development of the curriculum and implements, administers, and assesses current and new program curriculum to ensure the provision of quality education and to meet the changing needs of the profession of Nursing and the students.
      • Determines the schedule and content of courses with prerequisites to be offered each semester in consultation with the Dean. Coordinates the continuing assessment of curriculum and content of course offerings; develops new programs and courses to provide effective transfer to four-year institutions and ensure the employability of career-oriented students.
      • Participates in the development of articulation agreements with four-year institutions and hospitals to facilitate transfer of graduates and with high schools to facilitate tech-prep partnerships and the effective transfer of students to the College.
      • In conjunction with faculty, coordinates the selection and ordering of textbooks and related equipment and materials necessary for completion of the program's coursework. Encourages the development and usage of pedagogical technology and instructional media to contribute to effective teaching and learning; fosters the implementation of teaching/learning modalities that include active student participation such as reversing the classroom, use of clickers, case studies and simulations.
      • Ensures that labs utilizing computers and related equipment are properly maintained.
      • Assists in the identification and timely resolution of student problems.
    4. Ensures excellence of course curriculum and instruction through the recruitment, appointment, reappointment, and professional development of faculty:
      • Locates, recommends, and follows through on the hiring of faculty who meet the teaching standards established by the College. Operating within established Human Resources Department policies and procedures, performs advertising, resume screening, interviewing, and hiring of faculty to meet program demands.
      • Provides supervision, orientation and mentoring to full-time faculty. Conducts faculty in-class observations to assess teaching performance, obtains student evaluations, provide feedback and counseling, create developmental action plans, and determine and provide opportunity for tenure and career growth. Works with faculty on a one-on-one basis to create opportunities for personal development and growth.
    5. Establishes and maintains various program documentation and records. In conjunction with faculty, prepares periodic accreditation reports and documents as required by relevant, national accreditation agencies and the State Board of Nursing.
    6. Oversees all regulatory standards are being met.
    7. Provides support for the development of grants and participates in the proposal-writing process to ensure adequate levels of program funding and to aid in the development of new program offerings.
    8. Provides overall direction and ongoing supervision to the staff of the Nursing Program:
      • Provides ongoing leadership, advice, training, and guidance to staff;
      • Assesses staffing needs in order to make recommendations regarding effective hiring decisions; recommends the termination of staff, as necessary.
      • Ensures appropriate work distribution to staff.
      • Conducts and chairs faculty meetings and attends staff meetings to promote a constant flow of information, open discussions, knowledge sharing, and to keep staff well-informed.
      • Continually assesses the performance and skill base of all staff; oversees staff training and participates in recruitment.
      • Develops and communicates performance goals, completes performance evaluations within established timeframes; provides feedback, develops and acts on performance improvement plans, and determines and implements necessary disciplinary action, as needed.
      • Secures clinical sites at hospitals and health care agencies and develops contracts to provide clinical experiences for students.
      • Promotes the history and celebration of Nursing as a profession when indicated throughout the school year and through Nurses Week activities.
    9. Assists with recruitment and publicity for the Division and the College.
    10. Develops and recommends the annual program budget to the Dean. Monitors and analyzes the annual operating budget to ensure effective fiscal management and efficient cost control systems. Operates within established budget constraints, monitors budget allocations, and identifies and resolves budget variances to ensure adherence to the approved annual budget.
    11. Actively participates in the development and implementation of policies specific to the nursing program.
    12. Continues to develop professional and management skills through independent research, networking, attending seminars and workshops to maintain awareness of current and changing trends in education and specific to disciplines in area of responsibility. Remains knowledgeable of regulatory issues specific to the nursing program and administrative activities. Participates in State Nursing Organizations activities such as New Jersey League for Nursing and Associate Degree Council of Nursing Programs.
    13. Serves as an active member of various internal and external committees. Represents the College to external constituencies and projects a positive self-image of professionalism, confidentiality, honesty and personal integrity at all times.
    Position Preferred Qualifications
    • Minimum of a Master's Degree in Nursing.
    • Minimum of five years of teaching.
    • Relevant administrative experience in curriculum/course development, review and implementation, and oversight of faculty and staff.
    • Engagement in student success initiatives.
    • Commitment to promoting equitable outcomes for nursing students.
    • Engagement with the pre-nursing cohort, assessment of outcomes, and commitment to continuous improvement.
    Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Broad and comprehensive knowledge of Nursing curriculum and Nursing practice and understanding of the principles, methods, and techniques in program management, design, implementation, assessment, and administration required.
    • Knowledge of budgeting and cost control and skill in fiscal management required.
    • Ability to think conceptually, develop and implement policies and procedures, and make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments required.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, influence and negotiation skills required.
    • Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of constituencies and the academically under prepared in a multi-cultural community required.
    • Effective organization and prioritization skills required.
    • Computer proficiency also required.
    • Bilingual ability preferred, but not required.
