- The Staff Otolaryngologist is responsible for the care and administrative needs of the Otolaryngologyical surgery patient in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
- This position will be considered a leadership position with on-call, Otolaryngological emergencies, and surgical duties, in addition to non-operative clinical responsibilities. This is best defined as the in-house administrative position of the service because it coordinates the Attending functions as well as the Nursing and clerical functions to maintain a clinic atmosphere most conducive to quality patient care, as well as, responsible financial management of resources.
- The Staff Otolaryngologist also functions as a coordinator between the other attending physicians and other team members and will help establish and maintain relations with other key services to include (but not limited to): General Surgery and Medicine, Medical Oncology, Prosthetics, Nursing, Social Work, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitative Services, Radiology, support staff, and Dietetics. Cross coverage with other surgical services may also be required. Successful inter-and intra-service and facility facilitation is a critical aspect of the position.
- The Staff Otolaryngologist is directly responsible to the Chief of Otolaryngology, The Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff for all clinical and administrative duties. The Staff Otolaryngologist t is also responsible for coordination between the rotating Duke Residents and related staff, to fulfill the needs of the Otolaryngology Service and their patients.
- Provide medical and surgical care for both inpatients and outpatients in the Urology Surgery section. The Otolaryngology Surgery service encompasses a broad range of pathologic entities with both conservative as well as surgical treatment options. These patients often have severe concomitant medical problems, mental health and chronic pain issues and are multi-symptomatic. This intense interaction requires that the Otolaryngologist make and implement sound and reasonable decisions and demonstrate above average personal and team performance / cooperation. Exemplary attention to accuracy and detail is required.
- Admission History and Physicals, preoperative evaluations, orders, progress notes, aftercare plans and discharge summaries.
- Provide and develop medical education /counseling of patients and their families with a focus on excellent customer service
- Exhibits leadership and primary responsibility for admissions and medical care of patients, may coordinate these activities with residents/fellows/students if present on service.
- Provider inpatient and outpatient operative surgical care for the Otolaryngology patient
- Demonstrate the ability to diagnose and treat Otolaryngology surgery patients seen in consultation with other health care providers.
- Promote patient care programs for Otolaryngological surgery patients and periodically update them based upon current and new concepts.
- Lead the integration of the activities of the Otolaryngological surgery service with other patient care programs at the facility.
- Participates in long range planning and model development for effective delivery of Otolaryngology care and promotes adherence to cyber-security initiatives.
- Demonstrates leadership in promoting the distinctive and contributory role of the Otolaryngologist in providing urology care within the VA healthcare system.

- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

- Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
- For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement.
Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements:
NOTE:
VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.)
Approved residencies are:
(1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
[(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
(3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.Preferred Experience:

Education
